My Cage "Classic" 08/24/07

The strip's editor brought Melissa to my attention by showing me an elaborate, epic, battle scene she'd drawn for her Manga book 'Sokora Refugees' and asked if I thought she'd be a good artist for 'My Cage'. I told him yes, but that it was like showing me a Norman Rockwell painting and asking if he'd be good at drawing Beetle Bailey.

Originally run August 24th 2007.

Thanks for the question. When I researched submitting a comic strip, I noticed that most rejection letters people posted said basically, "Your artwork is good. You're writing needs work." So, I did a pitch where I drew the strips myself in MS Paint. My plan was to get rejection letters hopefully saying, "Your writing is good. You're art needs work." Which is what happened...except at King Features. The editor there, Jay Kennedy, liked the writing so much he decided to pair me with an artist.

My Cage

This raises a question: how did you pitch My Cage to a comic syndicate before you were teamed up with Melissa? Did you draw samples yourself? Care to share them?
