My Cage "Classic" 08/08/2007
Added 2021-02-03 05:01:00 +0000 UTCI'm white (Irish American), but come from a very diverse family. We're of Irish, Italian, Puerto Rican, Korean, and Dominican descents. Diverse sexualities too. The overall common element though is we're all goofballs! It's hard not seeing them as often with the pandemic. How're you all holding up?

I've really struggled with my mental health and managing my chronic illness during lockdown. I was lucky to be laid off from my customer-facing job and to be eligible for unemployment, but I was a bookseller and I badly miss my job. My partner is in school FT and was able to switch to all-online. Our first grader is also doing school entirely online. We are very lucky, we know that. to be able to isolate as we have. But we're in a one-bedroom apartment, so we're also climbing the walls. My partner is studying to be a teacher and should have been student-teaching by now, but that is still in limbo. He wasn't eligible for unemployment so we've been sucking down loans--he used to pick up odd jobs to help us make ends meet but that stopped too, of course. He's stretching to find classes he can take for spring and summer terms because his loans supply the bulk of our budget. We're not sure if that's going to work, or if it doesn't, what to do. He's got pre-existing conditions that make him high risk and even if he found a full-time job that covered rent, it would put us over the income limit for Medicare and we each have several medications we cannot afford otherwise. I ran out of employment benefits in mid-Dec and the new CAA didn't start issuing payments till last week. So we're lucky and safe. But under a lot of strain and facing a lot of uncertainty, even though odds are that it will work out fine for us. That is a ~weird~ tension to balance.
