Can we have an extended cut for rage with the machine? Its fucking great!

Michael

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention, it may have worked! Trump signed an Executive Order to "encourage better police practices." Yeah, we can argue whether it is effective or political or toothless... but who saw that coming!

Like it or not, we live in Trump's America. So we have to play by Trump's rules. Trump, the great deal maker, does this all the time. He bloviates and makes grand pronouncements with the intention of pulling the "Overton Window" further and further to the right... and toward fascism. You see it with his scrapping of international agreements, his betrayal of alliances, his disregard for previously established norms. Like a deal... make an offer so low that whatever the agreed compromise still favors you. Or charge a price so high that whatever meager amount you surrender seems like a bargain. So "Defund the Police" is just a reaction to that style of governance. If the right had it's way, we'd live in a police state. So to counter that (and bring the Overton Window back to center) one has to create a balanced (and therefore equally outrageous) counter-argument. Then the Overton Window is returned back to the fertile ground of rational compromise that exists in the center (as you noted in your podcast!). We've already see it in action. Trump has no problem using tear gas wielding soldiers against US Citizens peacefully exercising their 1st Amendment rights in a public park. So the natural counter-balance to that... is to defund the whole damn thing and send them all home. But now we've created balance! And we can start the hard work of finding a compromise that exists somewhere in the center. "Defund the Police" is just a natural reaction to the hard pull to the right (and fascism) that Trump has created... and yeah, it feels real gross having to play by his rules.

Honestly, I enjoyed the previous episode. I'm of the mind set we need to stay mad and vocal. I live in northeast Tennessee where it's probably 80% pro-Trump and very conservative. Homophobia and racism is rampant, even worse after the election. I lost my job last year due to the trade war and found myself working at a grocery store where I worked in high school and college and the amount of Trump hats just gets so depressing sometimes. So hearing that in my ear while working helps me alot.

Police training on deescalation. Remember the police incident in Toronto two years ago. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4632661. Would be good to remember how these incidents can go.

For those interested in the governmental side of police brutality, such as the provisions and laws that have allowed us to reach this moment in history, I highly recommend the most recent episode of a podcast called Congressional Dish, episode 216 titled "Dingleberries Against Police Brutality." Not only is Jennifer Briney very funny, she's very knowledgeable about the issues by doing weeks of research and listening to the related Congressional hearings. Tom and Cecil, she would be a great person to interview, not just about this, but about most things concerning our Congress.

To be fair, I also have both Rage Against the Machine and P!nk in my music player. Probably not for the same reasons as that one guy, though.

You could say the child whose chicken nugget was stolen by the rooster was — cock-blocked. 😐
