Episode 454: Magnum Opus

Comments

I found a 7-year-old article the other day about the secret fears of the super-rich. I thought it was fascinating. Basically, since all of their physical needs are met their fears are all emotional and psychological but, of course, all tied to their money. They don't feel financially secure (yes, you read that right) and their self-worth seems to be really tied up in what they think others (will) think of them. What I got out of the article was that the super rich apparently don't like to have experiences together (instead of just buying stuff for each other) and they don't have any talents or hobbies to help them feel a sense of purpose. It sounds like their children have no love-of-learning-for-the-sake-of-learning or have no desire to try to turn a talent/hobby into something, like a business or to help out other people. It also sounds like the parents don't know how practical discipline with consequences works. Maybe the super-rich are just super uninteresting people. I'd much rather be an interesting person living paycheck to paycheck than a miserable sod who has all the means in the world but no desire to actually explore life. Here's the article: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/04/secret-fears-of-the-super-rich/308419/ For the TL;DL crowd, here's a really good summary of the article: https://whatheheckaboom.wordpress.com/2014/09/27/article-summary-secret-fears-of-the-super-rich/

They’ve also been told that if you tax the rich, it's only a matter of time before the evil government will tax the poor.

The poor defend the rich because they’ve been taught to believe that unless we make the wealthy happy they will make the economy go away.
