I’m a gun person. I was an infantry soldier, but also been shooting since I was 7 when I got my first 22. Largely unsupervised. I still shoot a fair amount, probably more than most right wing gun nuts. I agree that we need gun control. I agree that we need mental health evaluations and safety classes. I think it should be a 4-5 day training and mental health evaluation in order to purchase/ own a firearm. I’d gladly do this to own what I have now. We have to sell it as a thing of pride to the right wing. It doesn’t take away rights, it shows responsibility. But if we could sit down and have a beer it would be a long conversation. My buddies and I have talked this through at length. We shoot all the time, don’t like the NRA, and would support well thought out restrictions. The idea of not talking about gun control is honestly the lack of empathy

Since Australia came up a -lot-, just to clarify a few things: 1) It took at least two mass shootings for Australia to achieve the current legislation (Port Arthur -and- Monash), but you could make an argument for earlier events like the Milperra massacre priming the legislature. 2) There are more guns in Australia now than before the gun buyback. Quite a lot more... Proportionally there are still fewer semi-automatics, but it only took 9 years (1997-2006) for the number of registered, legal imports to replace the total number of firearms recovered and destroyed under the 1996 legislation (a total that was itself somewhat inflated by the inclusion of obsolete wartime surplus firearms from the Lithgow arsenal). The idea that Australia became a gun-free society in 1996 is often repeated and completely ridiculous.
