Raiju, rough translation is Thunder Beast or Animal. A companion to Raijin, a Thunder God in eastern mythos. I think they are akin to the hunting dogs of Artemis in Greek mythos and Orions dogs. Though they are depicted as being different animals, sometimes wolf's, weasels, and such.
