It’s a sad Friday in the news cycle. Another school shooting. A plane crash. And the usual shit storm that is the current administration. Oh and Ebola is making a run for it, to name just a few things. It can feel overwhelming so I’m going to focus on the good.
One of the highlights of my week was going to listen to Jonah Goldberg give a talk about his new book, Suicide of the West, and despite the grim title, Jonah’s is a message of hope and a call to find some gratitude for all that we have. This book couldn’t come soon enough for me.
I wish I could paraphrase his brilliance (I can’t because I’m about 1/1000th as smart as him), but there are plenty of videos and podcasts he’s done recently that I recommend checking out. Also, buy his book. He’s a rare, nuanced voice in an increasingly tribal world filled with smart people who often unfortunately resort to cheap clickbait and partisan hackery because it’s profitable instead of what’s principled.
It’s easy to go down a negative rabbit hole of fear and doom and self-pity and social media makes it exceptionally easy, so I’ve been taking the weekends off entirely to volunteer, be with family and friends and write stuff for Patreon and other outlets.
This weekend I’ll be posting two pieces here that I’ve been working on for my subscribers: “Kill Your Heroes”, which is my thoughts about the Intellectual Dark Web and, “My Gripe with Jordan Peterson is Personal” which explains how I went from loving JP to seeing something about him and his following that I had been blind to thanks to a weird set of circumstances that unfolded.
If you didn’t catch it, I wrote about the mind games men play to delay their orgasm for Mel Magazine—it’s a fun light piece for a dark day.
To my subscribers, I’ll see ya this weekend right here. To my non-subscribers I’ll see ya on Monday. Be safe and be kind!
