Catching up on the podcast, but just wanted to comment---the funny thing about Notre Dame is that for most of its life it actually has been in ruins. What happened to Notre Dame is nothing compared to what happened during the French Revolution when people looted, wrecked, and partied there. Hugo's _Hunchback of Notre Dame_ was originally written because he wanted attention to be brought to the church to repair it. (Also he wasn't concerned about social justice; those aspects were added by later adaptations.) Basically: Notre Dame has been through worse, a white author guaranteed it will always be repaired by rich donors, and basically weeping over Notre Dame is at best performance art.

The most frustrating thing about this is the soothing acknowledgement to the sad white people that ND burning is a tragedy. It just isn’t on par with the irrecoverable losses of indigenous lands. There was never any question that ND would be restored and now it’s received a disgusting sum of money that is completely unnecessary for the richest religion in the world. It’s not even close to a tragedy. It’s incidental.
