MEDIA INDIGENA 133

ON THIS WEEK'S INDIGENOUS ROUNDTABLE: Provocative or problematic? We discuss why opinion is so sharply divided over 'First Contact,' a new APTN mini-series showcasing Canadians’ deep ignorance about Aboriginal peoples in the hopes of "challenging their perceptions and confronting their opinions." And, with our discussion unexpectedly going so in-depth and protracted (including references to Lakoff and Simpson), the discussion on this topic alone eats up the time normally devoted to three topics!

Joining host/producer Rick Harp at the roundtable this week are Brock Pitawanakwat, assistant professor of Indigenous studies at the University of Sudbury, and Candis Callison, visiting professor of Canadian Studies at Princeton University (on leave from UBC).

Anna, I'm glad you got something out of this week's discussion; it was a tough show to do because, while we have to assume the intentions of the producers were genuine, we felt a critical eye on the possibly unintended impacts of the show's format was important.

Rick Harp

Really enjoyed this episode; extremely relatable in many ways, as I expected. Did not expect to hear Brock talk about being a germphobic, and relating that to the 'dirty indian' trope. that rang such a bell! I was germphobic as a school kid, and had never thought about any link, but it makes so much sense - an odd and unexpected comfort, that I didn't even know I needed. Miigwech!
