Other than the backgrounds, I usually don't use much direct pose references. Most of the time I just use muscular anatomy from books or other artist etc and then my imagination takes on from there. I definitely look up highly skilled artists and pick up some of their techniques on how do they draw this and that. The backgrounds are the ones I need help the most, though if you look carefully it's all just boxes.
