Well, actually hy's more down-and-out, compared to what hy had previously.

Vrae (a skunktaur) seems to have always wanted to be a doctor, but found hys test-scores upon being accepted to Dewclaw University lacking. However, with encouragement and tutelage, hy graduated, though barely, by hys own estimation.

A likely success-driven childhood has lead to a lot of self doubt, dissatisfaction and fear of inadequacy. Hy had a strong image of how life was meant to be after graduation, and because of that, reacted poorly to how things played out.
Due to hys circumstances of being merely 'comfortable' rather than exceptional, focal, admired or independently capable (such as gaining employment only due to being vouched for by their objectively more accomplished partner)combined with ungrateful,entitled patients, a constant feeling of being overwhelmed by potential lack of knowledge and the reality of being given low-risk cases, dissatisfaction grew.

If one was not being lauded, one was clearly failing and this was a feeling that curdled and intensified and began to be taken out on those closest to hym, who hy perceived as 'getting everything they wanted, easily, without any struggle'.

This lead to hym making a drastic mistake, and as a result, almost lost it all.

Recovery is slow, and seemingly at a stand-still, and the blow to Vrae's ego has only served to lower hys self-esteem further.

Vrae (of House) Redpaw appears in Seth Trigg's Chakona Universe series of comics and is introduced in the first 'Shir Nicewhisperer' spin-off 'Goldbloom@Dewclaw'.
