I’ve always wanted a Bigsby… it’s such a lovely and gentle sound - but much more importantly they make guitars look beautiful! I originally decided to try a Bigsby with a Vibramate … which is a base plate that allows you to add a Bigsby without any drilling - by anchoring to your original tailpiece studs. Unfortunately that didn’t work. This 1976 ES335 was originally a trapezoid tailpiece and someone converted it to a stop-tailpiece at some point. Problem is they didn’t put it in the correct place - it’s out by about half an inch. So I had to go for it and do a permanent fix. That’s a big decision - involving drilling holes into the front of a 45 year old guitar.
I bought an old hand drill to do things gently… and a “Custom Made” plate to cover the studs and make it look original. I took my time - only had 1 beer while I watched the Italy vs Austria game - and managed to get it done. I had to fill some old holes by the strap button (glue and toothpicks!) but apart from that it was pretty straightforward. Hardest thing is getting it all lined up before drilling.
I think it looks incredible - and it also sounds great! Now I need some songs to suit this guitar. First up might be the Better Call Saul into - but then I will need suggestions! Thanks again for your support - this is the kind of upgrade you make possible!
