Development pause

I have to put the Cyberpink: Tactics development on pause for some months. I might still work on a few things here and there, but nothing consistent.

The change is because my main job situation changed. In short I have to spend more hours with the regular job and would have less hours for this game.

I recommend you stop your Patreon support for now as there won't be any meaningful updates for a while. I won't close the page though and if som...

March progress

In March I got the version 0.22 out. It's more of a tech demo for some of the new systems. Good to get some early feedback and potential bug reports too. It sucks that quite a lot of the previously ready stuff had to be removed so new versions feel like steps back. Not much to do about it sadly. Previous versions had their own problems. It is slow development, but at least I'm making some progress.

On the topic of progress, I've been keeping track of my tasks in Trello ...

February progress

I didn't manage to get a presentable version out in February, but I should be able to get it out very soon now. The version upload is stuck behind me trying to make the level prettier. Nothing fancy like the first two levels I made way back. Those took weeks to create. Right now I just want something with the right mood.

During the month I worked primarily on the non-tile combat system. Quite many bugs appeared at first after I converted the old system fully over. These...

January progress

In December I already mentioned planning to do bigger changes in the game. In January I got to making some of these changes and testing them out. I've been narrowing in on what my new vision for the game is.

Broader gameplay direction

Based on player feedback, general gamer interests, the adult game market position and my own preferences I decided to make these changes.

Larger explorable zones work well into two aspects. Firstly the open w...

December progress

I'm happy with how the end of last year went. I managed to clean up all the animations and got another version out. Sure the version didn't really have too much to show, but I think it's still good.

I had to make some animations for Naomi and Melianna. Also cut some existing long sex animations into shorter ones that loop perfectly.

I worked on a few smaller things like the ice cube that is used in some sex animations or some particle effect...

November progress

It was a decently productive month. A lot of annoying tasks got done, but nothing to really show for it. At the end of the previous month I started a rename effort to clean up the naming within the project. Basically I separated the character's story name from their code name. This way file, model, texture, material and animation names are more consistent in length and clarity. For example CoolerDrone to R-cld or Kate to F-cat. Actual in game names can more easily change.

October progress

It was a good productive month. I think I got everything I wanted done, possibly even more so. I already talked about the planned works in previous month's post, but I'll summarize them here. Movement option detection lag fixed, tiles are nicely color coded based on ability used, AI is somewhat functional again and the game is playable. I managed to finally get another playable version (v0.20) out. It is a really stripped down version compared to some previous ones, but that'...

September progress

While in August I mostly got some general underlying systems working and ideas figured out, now in September I did most of the actual code refactor. The result is that the game basically works on top of the new combat system now. No more reliance on square grids, leader characters, card system or my old crappy code structure.

One important change is also that the sex animations are triggered by character abilities. Neither of them dies, instead th...

August progress

I had planned on working on sex animations, but ended up not touching them at all. Instead I put all my efforts on the gameplay side. As I have had major changes planned there for a while, it all is a really slow process of refactoring most of the code I have.

I basically decided to start using more add-ons which handle certain parts of the project for me. 2 years ago I was way more against add-ons, but now it's clear that some of these add-ons exist for a good reason. For example...

July progress

This month went in big part to working on sex animations. Two of them got done and posted on Discord server and another one is half way done. By the way, if someone isn't on the Discord server and hasn't seen them yet, feel free to comment or message me about it.

The animations I've done this far are quite interesting I think. I made them into a bit more detailed loops. The robot characters with arms allow for much more creativity. The other types like Attack Drone or especially Shield ...

June progress

It's been a really slow month on the progress, as in I couldn't find much time to work on Cyberpink. I did manage to focus my efforts towards something really specific and finished it up too.

I worked on the gallery mode. Camera controls I had made better before already, but now I moved the view into the scene I had previously for quite a while used for rendering my animations and other marketing material. Big improvement in the new setup is the lighting, which wa...

May progress

I kept continuing work on the same things as the previous month. Demon girl character and project cleanup.

I started by properly texturing the character's clothing too. Then did some improvements on the skin texture to give it some more depth. I created some basic animations, idle, walk and spawning. Animating itself went fairly fast, but it took more time to figure out what kind of a spawn I want to create. It's a more supernatural one. Then part...

Gameplay questions

While I'm still working on the demon girl character, I would let some answers flow in to help with the gameplay changes.

I'm already decided on some changes, for example the ability for leader characters to walk around on the field too. Many other changes are still up in the air.

I'm using Google Forms because it seems way more flexible and comfortable to use than Patreon's built in polls.

April progress

This month I worked on mainly two things. Both of them included a lot of cleaning up.

At first I just continued work on the demon girl, but as I got to the end of concepting and modeling, I had to start fixing things up. I didn't feel like doing that though, so I instead worked on cleaning up the Unity project instead. I basically re-arranged the whole project structure to be feature based. This made it easy to clean up and delete all the old leftover code files t...

March progress

I mainly worked on two things this month and got some decent progress. With both I'm trying to break a bit way from the stuff I've made earlier.

Simpler abstract levels that are way quicker to make. I made two of them to try different themes and see how long each takes to make. The sci-fi one is similar to all the previous stuff and was quicker to make as I already have lots of assets to use. The nature one required some more work on asset creation, but placing objects ...

February progress

There was basically no progress this month. I've been more busy with my main job and got really sick for well over a week. Although I did manage to do the poll to find out what you guys view as important for the game.

What I found out from the poll:

It's clear that the detailed girl models are a big selling point for the game. Variety of animations is important too. Surprisingly, the detail level for the animations isn't as important. <...

What do you like?

I'm trying to figure out what makes Cyberpink: Tactics interesting for people and what isn't as important.

Some of the options are things that are already in the game. I'm trying to see how much you actually care about these aspects.

Some of the options are not in the game. I want to see if I might be missing anything crucial. Maybe I'm still missing tons of necessary features.

Try to only check boxes for things that are necessary for you! For example:

There isn't too much to tell about this month. Majority of the time went to working on the robot character's animations.

I did manage to come up with a way to better animate longer loops. 5-15 seconds instead of 1-3 seconds. Main concept is to layer two separate animations together. A base short loop, one thrust for example. A longer overlay animation for leans, head turns, speed changes and facial expression changes. It's not a unique idea and I have been thinking about it for a ...

December progress

All of this month I spent on working on the new humanoid robot character. I finished up all the technical stuff quickly and moved onto animating him. More precisely, sex animations. These are actually pretty fun to work on because the humanoid shape allows for many poses and ways to move. It is a bit more work to animate, but it's worth it.

Out of all the robots, this one feels like it has the highest entertainment potential. Initially when I started the development, I went with s...

I started off the month by working on something people had been requesting for a while. Health points instead of a gradual health bar. Initially the game actually had points. Then I though that maybe it would be nice if everyone's health and damage was in hundreds, so more random elements could be added, but now it seems like predictability is better for the game.

After that I started working on adding better camera controls for gallery view. It allows ...

The first half of the month or so went to creating all the Rea animations. The sex ones took most of the time as they are longer loops, need robot animating and have to overall look better as people pay more attention to them. The gameplay ones got done way faster. They are possibly even weak, but I can come back to them at some later point if I want.

Once I had added the animations in the game, I felt like I should really add new abilities to Kate and Rea, so t...

Project monetization

For over a year Cyberpink: Tactics Patreon page has had this in it's about message "I want to make it a free game and actually finish it too." I wanted to see if this game's development could fund itself without actually requiring people to pay to play. By now this specific idea seems unrealistic and my plan has to change. I'll share my thought process and plan changes here.

How bad is the current funding method? The income ha...

Most of the month I worked on the cutscene. The NSFW animation got a fair bit of polish and an additional variation (knotting). I also experimented with a custom skin shader that would enable wet skin effect. It's pretty nice so I'll leave it as is for now.

This month I worked more consistently and managed to get most of the Kate apartment animation to play out as I wanted. One or two key animations are still missing. Rest of the animation work would be to polish up some of the existing ones.

I ended up adding a NSFW scene in there too. Kate pleasing herself with one of her dildos while "taking a shower". In there I haven't quite gotten her facial expression right, currently it's way too silly.

July progress

As expected (reason discussed in previous month post), not much got done in July. All of the work went towards Kate's apartment so I could make the cutscene in there. It came out pretty well. Found some nice asset store assets I could use, but also had to make some myself.

I also worked a bit on the animations that can be used for the scene. Kate walking to her bed, tired. Laying down and sleeping. Still need to make some interaction animations wi...
