Good afternoon, Blackbirds!!

I know I always say I’m excited to share everything with you — and I mean it every time!! But I really have been thrilled to try something out and show you the results.

Yes yes, our beloved best boy Hemlock is back en deshabille to celebrate Yule!! As you all know, it isn’t very usual for me to create a whole new illustration just for the monthly bonus card. However, I’m a little exhausted by every illustration I make being a 35-50+ hour grand work, especially after the last few months of ridiculous detail. Of course, that is the kind of work I love to make, but my soul yearns to remember how to make quicker little things too.

I’ve pulled together some inspiration for historical works that rely very heavily on simple but engaging linework and flat color. I’ve included two of those pieces here! I really adore those works, and I’m going to enjoy continuing to try to emulate them when I’m in the mood to make new little things for bonus cards.

I think I got pretty close to the mark — especially in the original simple gradient map, which I’ve also included, I feel like I was very much onto something. But something still feels off, doesn’t it? What do you think it is? 🤔🤔🤔
