Redundant (to you) announcement video

Hey folks, I made a somewhat cleaner video to announce the studio expansion for public consumption. There's nothing in it that you haven't seen already, and I'm gonna release it publicly tomorrow morning, but I figured that's no reason not to post it here - it's not like I exactly flood your inboxes on a normal week.

Also, this is the first time (I think) that we've used the Flycam, sort of a super-low-rent steadicam (my real one is missing pieces) that doesn't provide any stabiization, it just makes it easier to carry a Real Camera for long periods. It's smoother than a totally handheld shot, but still definitely shaky. I'm curious what you all think - less nauseating than a Gopro? More? Share Your Comments

Oh by the way I lied. It's Season 4 now.

Hell yeah, i’m here for the beginning of S4!

So that's a perfect analogy for why it doesn't work, hahaha. Not trying to be dismissive, because this is exactly what I intended when I started collecting the stuff. Then I realized that... Video just looks like video, and the purpose of pretty much all production gear is to make sure that the viewer doesn't notice it exists. I thought about the idea of doing some sort of mock live show or something, but I realized that you'd never be able to tell what role the thing I was trying to demonstrate was playing; 99% of what you would see would just be a halfhearted TV production. With music gear, what the equipment is doing is directly the focus - that is, if we're talking about synths, drum machines, DAWs, VSTs. Now think about mics; can anyone pull off an interesting mic demo? Nah, it's impossible, the resulting video is nothing more than a demonstration of singing or of whatever instrument they're miking, and while the result might be useful to somebody looking to buy a particular microphone, the specifics will be lost on everyone else - which is most of the audience. Likewise, a camera is a camera, they all produce output that looks basically the same, and the distinctions are so subtle that they mean nothing unless you're an actual broadcast engineer, which even I'm not. And while there IS video gear that applies active, visible effects, it's divided between "really important, but completely unimpressive looking", like Chyrons or chroma keyers, and "gimmicky nonsense only used by amateurs or MTV producers in 1992", like the video toaster. I could go on, but basically what it comes down to is that if I point at the *output* of these things, it'll mean nothing to almost everyone, and that's kind of as it should be. Most of the value of any given device in this industry is what it does for the *operator*, so the parts that matter to me are the user interface and capabilities. Hope that makes sense!

For all the video gear, have you tried the angle of making a "mock-production" with the purpose of showing off the capabilities of a piece of gear? That formula seems to work pretty well for the music production side of YouTube, where they make a song with an old synth or pedal to demonstrate. That might also be a big ask for a one-man team, though, I wonder if you could help with someone else's production and work in a behind-the-scenes video on your own channel explaining how you used the gear in question.

camera lens smashed while filming a mainboard review? sounds like a freak accident.

I was curious how long it would take for anyone to notice. That is actually a deep scratch in the lens that occurred sometime while filming the BP6 video; the lens is ruined, and I didn't have $300 to replace it or a week to wait for a new one to ship, so I decided to just shoot as-is. As expected almost nobody noticed it was there, so it was the right call, but I still gotta replace this thing at some point and that's frustrating.

"cleaner" video: partly. The particle/fingerprint(?) on the camera lens in the first part triggered my inner Monk.

adorfer

yeah that's fair and appreciated!

pleonasticTautology

Hell yeah, dude. I'm firmly in the camp of appreciating every video, including this year's benchtop output, but I'm absolutely stoked for what you can do with this new space. That's quite the collection and I can't wait for you to share it with us all!

as for the 'shaky footage' i think its one of those things nobody really notices unless ya mention it - i do the same thing a lot.. ill bring something up, THEN people complain about it :^) as long as its not like that one video from YEARS ago (Weird Stuff That I Have #3) with the gopro on your head we all good! (thats the only video i havent been able to watch all the way thru lol)

Totally Normal

Hahaha, that's completely temporary, I'm going to be getting a different power bar that actually has mounting tabs later

Cathode Ray Dude

i have only one comment... ZIP TIES!!! haha that blue painters tape holding up the power bar tickles my OCD in a way i cannot begin to explain! LMAO

Totally Normal

big mistake calling it season 4, now you have to best your season 3 intro video..... impossible task

qdoggie

Dude, I watched 45 minutes of you rambling about a soldering iron. It definitely doesn’t always have to be big stories! And man I’m excited for season 4 now ☺️

🌻 zebby

hell yeah, love the new space! looks very cool! Any plans to make a new Season 4 intro video? I loved the Season 3 announcement video more then I care to admit.

thank you for filtering the CRT noise - I can hear it and it irritates me, enough that i've used equalizer software to get rid of it in other people's videos before

‏hy7frnr6n xrdtfy‏v6tgy‏ac

(I actually filter out the rest of it after the initial turn on because a lot of people find it incredibly unpleasant, regardless of age)

Cathode Ray Dude

Yeah I keep the initial whine, teens can deal

Cathode Ray Dude

season 4!!!

Kelli Mariella K

I misread GoPro as Gorpo and wasn't sure what was going on at first

disproportionately massive dwayne johnson from the end of furious 6

Excited for season 4! Also, this may be us being old and nostalgic, but please don't remove the flyback whine of the CRT turning on.

pleonasticTautology

Excited to see what you have in store for season 4! Keep up the good work.

It's alright, we're used to being lied to by Microsoft for over three decades now as to how "forever" their latest version of their flagship products, namely Windows, is supposed to last. Season 3 couldn't possibly have gone on forever. 😛 Anyways, here to season 4!

DurradonXylles

Season 4 hypee

Loonie Lummox

I think we all knew this would turn into Season 4 sooner or later ;) I know I'm certainly excited for the future!

Aaronjamt

I fucking knew it was gonna be season 4, ha!
