Here's an update on the 'finished' 3 2-page spreads I have from the Atlas Elyden, detailing the major world nations alphabetically. This includes nations that may not get a map in the Atlas, as well as some maps that I intend to make but haven't got round to yet (hence the TBD under some of the informative text for some of the regions - some details, like total populations and square-area, need a finished map). Though all nations with maps will be featured here.
I've been posting the nation fact boxes as I upload new maps, though the first bunch of maps I made did not have any, so I'm slowly going about adding those and adding them to the listings posted here.
Each A3 spread will have around 10 - 12 similar entries, each containing the state flag, a territory map, generic info (this will be the same for all nation: Square-area, Population, Capital, Languages, Religion, Currency, Imports, Exports), and a small history/travelogue detailing the region.
I expect to have around 16 pages ready in all (8 2-page spreads) detailing all the nations and areas I'm concentrating on - this only scratches the surface of all the nations in Elyden, though I'll be focus on those around the Inner Sea for now.
Some of the info (such as the square-area) is precisely calculated from my Photoshop files, where others (such as the populations) are guestimates - though every city detailed in the maps has a population, I assume that many hundreds of smaller or less-important settlements are not included in the Atlas Maps (yet...), so I've had to estimate the populations. These can easily be updated in the future once I have more details. The same is true for imports/exports, which I came up with based on the details entered in the maps I've made so far, though can be updated. The project is quite helpful as I have gone back and edited and updated many of my earlier maps, and expect I'll continue doing this as I make more entries.
I've been putting off making flags for some time as I don't consider myself very good with flags and I'm not much of a vexillologist. I find flags with three bands of colours (like France, Ireland, Germany Italy, etc.) very boring, and prefer a bit more symbolism, but such flags take a very long time to think up and design.
Personally, I find Coat of Arms more interesting than flags, and the Encyclopaedia Elyden will contain the Coat of Arms of the individual nations as well as their flags, but this part of the Atlas Elyden doesn't need more information than the flags, though, if I'm unhappy with them I can easily replace them in the future. And I can see myself changing or updating more than a few of these flags in the future!
Note: I had already posted the first page some time ago, and you may notice some flags and information have changed since then, proving my last statement. Nothing is ever set in stone and everything is subject to change.
