which do you prefer?

I've started work on laying out the Atlas Elyden and am thinking about how I can layout the maps to make them easier to read - in other worse, where can I change the orientation of maps from portrait to landscape.

In most cases this can't be done as the shape of a nation dictates the way its presented on the page - you couldn't put a map of England or South America on a page in landscape orientation as it would lead to too much wasted space, it's only natural for such a map to be in portrait orientation, though that would necessitate the reader turning the book round to read it properly. This is common in atlases.

Now, when it comes to the Korachani peninsula, I an actually go both ways. Below are my early mock ups for the Korachani map. Eventually I went with Portrait orientation, though looking back at these I quite like both, so I was wondering what my patrons would prefer seeing - landscape or portrait?

FWIW - the landscape version is a better use of space and the map can be zoomed in more to better make use of the layout, whereas the portrait version looks  a bit nices as the entirety of the peninsula is visible.

note: I'm planning on redoing the earlier Atlas maps as I think they're beginning to show their age and in the case of Korachan I want to redo the topography completely as I'm not happy with it, so it's easy-enough for me to change the map.

let me know what you think!

edit: I'll be taking the poll onto my other social media accounts in a few days but want your opinions first :)

thanks, -its a very similar reason to why i prefer landscape wherever i can, as the orientation make more sense i a book 2-page spread than portrait

I'd be voting for landscape in just about any case that makes sense: though obviously some land shapes just don't work well for landscape, where possible I like adding these maps to my rotation of desktop wallpaper images and obviously landscape lends itself considerably better to that.

you can turn your mobile round you know :p

I think portrait would be a good default, for the reason you mentioned above about book formats, but also I suspect many patrons (myself included) view a lot of content on smartphones, which are of course portrait oriented. I'd do portrait except in circumstances where landscape necessitates it.

Well as a Brit I can tell you a thing or two about the problems in opening up choices to the voting public... :D

Thanks 😀 seems as though my fave option is losing though

I'd go with Portrait as well for similar reasons. The sea makes its own border, while the land is the part that is constrained by the edges. (And voted on it ;) )

cool, now go vote on the poll :)

I think the portrait evaluates the privileged korachani geographical position more, because it show its peninsular nature
