Where's Where in Elyden?

UPDATE: June 2024

I received a message from a Patron asking for more details regarding the relationships between the maps I’ve been posting. And that got me thinking. I've been living in this world for so long now that I've come to take a lot of things for granted, things that might need more explaining to those of you looking from the outside in.

Though I have posted some maps of the Inner Sea which incorporate most of the maps I've created so far, I might not have been as clear as I might need to be :)

So I've decided to take the time to show you what the relationship between all these nations is. I've put together a few maps to show off where all these nations are in relation to one another, and this is the result.

The main image, above, shows the region of the Inner Sea, which was the starting point of these maps. Below are two other maps, showing the East of Llachatul, where some planned maps will likely be based, and the region of the Sea of Lethea, where my recent maps have mostly been based

Each of these three maps includes multiple regional maps, numbers and detailed below for ease of reference. The first and second maps are in a conic projection - identical to the projection of the individual smaller maps, whereas the third map is in equirectangular projection, due to it being centred on the equator. This matches most of the maps depicted within it, but not all. The maps of Porphyr (63), Bant and Kuligala (66), and Abacardat and Jahadat (68), were originally in conic projections, so appear distorted here.

The numbers represent the order in which the nations have been created and posted and are, in order:

Hopefully, this is helpful in placing the world :

Hi! In the case of this map in particular, I just realized the individual maps and rotated them to overlay on the flat green base map. The way I make the normal maps is a bit more involved. A tutorial for my method can be found here - https://www.deviantart.com/vorropohaiah/art/Atlas-Elyden-Style-Guide-tutorial-629423829

How did you stitch together all of the maps in the top picture and get the roads and other features to sync up so perfectly? Do you have a world map that all the details go on first and then you just crop out small sections for individual maps or is there another way?

Dennis Perry

Yep I got this one. It took me a good part of last night to wrap my head around your work to understand how you achieved it. I'll come back to you with more questions I think, if you don't mind! 😁 Again, I got a lot of admiration for what you're achieving. It's impressive.

Erwan Roudaut

yes, that's quite important so you might want to choose what the prime meridian line is in your world, to make this easier to do. Mine is along the W coast of Korachan (https://www.patreon.com/posts/29044929)

Nate Mangion

OK thanks for the answer! Do you also import them while feeding their exact location (latitude/longitude) to GProjector to keep the right curvature?

Erwan Roudaut

Hi :) unfortunately, you're right about G Projector - it is very bad at details - the exported map is always very low res. You will have to trace over it. That's why I only import a black and white map with no details into G Projector - the actual topographical layers are done on photoshop after I've done the conic projection in G Projector.

Nate Mangion

Hey Nate. I'm asking even though it's been a long time since you worked on this part of your work. Do you, by any chance, remember how you made the conic projection? GProjector lets me do it, but I then lose all my layers and a lot of quality, while Fluidify 2 doesn't really make it easy to do this specific projection. If you happen to remember or have any tip on how to do this conic projection on both a big or smaller area, I would be very grateful! Thanks for the amazing work and for the inspiration it gives me to continue in map making. Best :)

Erwan Roudaut

thanks :) Yes, that's Sammaea, THE big continent in the world - luckily for me most of it is uninhabited and largely unexplored so I'll mostly be working on the coastal areas, though I'm sketching out some mountains that along the southern most border in the globe I posted, under areas 19, 15 and 28. It's going to be the single smallest scale map I've made for the atlas, so its going to focus on a huge area, that's mostly magical corrupted deserts, so ill have lots of interesting stuff to write alongside the map.

Nate Mangion

This is fantastic stuff Nate, really appreciate the high-level view to put it all in perspective. And ye gods, that's an enormous continent further south.

Eric Scheid

if you had already asked very sorry for forgetting :( I'll be more careful to honour any requests in the future

Nate Mangion

In reality you are not the only one who asked fort this sort of global picture

Impesio

luckily for us, through some amazing quirk or fate an imperial mile is 1:1 to an English (imperial) mile :) so that should help. I;m not a complete sadist - and don't intentionally make extra work for myself :) And yes, the world is pretty big, and though the Inner Sea is inspired by the Mediterranean (in which I live right in the middle of...) it is 'quite' a bit larger. at the top of my head it's a good 4,000 miles across. I' be very interested to see how the maps are being used - send me a message with any details you'd like!

Nate Mangion

Dear Nate, A thousand thanks for your helpful reference map. I'm the one who asked for it, and it will really help me to run my RPG campaign in the Inner Sea region. While we are at it, could you please tell me how many meters or English miles are in an Imperial mile? It doesn't seem to be a 1:1 correspondence, since that would make the Inner Sea area truly humongous compared to the Mediterranean, its nearest Terran analog. BTW, if you would get a kick out of seeing any of the campaign materials I have created using your images, gimme an email or some other way to send them to you- they're not really online. Thanks Again, Andrew Lovett

Andrew Lovett

it might have been done in flexify 2 plugin on PS - I did it a while ago so im not sure. If the detail is good its probably flexify 2

Nate Mangion

Borderz seem too well draw :/

Impesio

if you mean the globe, i just put the equirectangular world map into G. Projector and set it to Orthographic.

Nate Mangion

Sorry if I ask you, how did you make the second map in a so perfect projection?

Impesio
