I've always loved vampires. A particular kind of vampire, mind you - things like Nosferatu, Dracula, Strahd, the Von Carsteins. And I'm a bit fed-up with their proliferation of popular culture (same as zombies, though I've never liked them as much). Too many pop TV shows and movies glamourising what I always thought should be a tragic story.
Elyden does not have vampires, though there are denizens of the night that fulfil a similar niche (creatures that subsist on the souls of others, rather than blood. for instance) and house Porphyron is such an homage to vampire culture.
Its members don't suck blood, they don't have an aversion to water or garlic, and certainly don't change into bats. I have kept some of the more 'realistic' aspects: all members are now greatly allergic to sunlight (an extreme form of porphyria. that sounds similar...), they have a dependency on Atramental drugs without which they begin to show signs of anaemia, and some also show an allergy to silver.
Most members are recluses due to their conditions, which of course leads the common people to speculate. And from such speculation come folktales and legends that bear many similarities to the vampire stories that we are familiar with. It's a mix of 'real' vampires and real vampires.
