Atlas Elyden Key

Updated: 14/07/2022

Here’s the key to the atlas maps  I’m working on. It’s not final, though it’s a polished version of what I’ve been using when working on my maps so thought I’d post it here, hopefully making things easier for those of you who are following my work (thanks!).

It’s pretty-much self-explanatory, detailing things like elevation, hydrography, geography, settlement sizes and typography, as well as the resource and industry symbols I’ve been using so far.

I’d like your opinions on the key in general, and the resource and industry symbols in particular - are they intuitive-enough? Can you make out what they’re meant to represent without having to look at the key? Are there any in particular that don’t make sense? Keep in mind some of them represent fantastical animals that aren’t immediately recogniseable (like indriks and mantras).

Thanks for your time.

thanks for reminding me about that! I've been meaning to update this for a while. I've just updated it with a more recent version, with a few more labels than the previous one, and the mismatched ones have been fixed too. thanks :)

I just noticed that the baking, bird keeping/falconry, and bookmaking/printing are mixed up on the resources section of the map.

so sorry I never replied to this earlier. I actually like the spool of yarn, though worry it might represent a broader idea than textiles. but I;m using other broad/vague icons (like poppy heads for drugs in general). I'll add that to the to-do list for when I next update the legend, thanks :)

I really like the legend. I do have two critiques. When I saw the shirt (Textiles) on your maps I thought that was armor or something and the same with the shield (Military). What I think is more intuitive for textiles is a spool of yard perhaps? And for the military, I cant think of a better way to represent that, maybe chevrons, like those used in common military ranks, I think that is pretty intuitive and wont run the risk of thinking its an arms manufacturing plant or armory. These are my thoughts, take them for what they are worth! Overall, I love the legend and the symbols for resources and areas of interest, fantastic job!
