I don't claim to be an expert in lapel sausages, but as an attempt to reassure you: I think they are usually omni-directional, meaning that the volume won't change if they're pointing the "wrong" way - only the distance from the mouth affects volume. Indeed, sometimes you'll see them (e.g. on BBC panel shows) deliberately mounted pointing downwards, to reduce sibilant noises. So you probably don't need to worry about previously-recorded lapel mic stuff with the mic pointed "wrongly" :)
