EARLY ACCESS: BYAMPOD EP 112 - The Hard Shoulder Part 1

A tad later than planned... here's next week's BYAMPOD.

There's a Writer's Club podcast coming Monday (and apologies to those of you waiting on a Biffo's Brain this week - sorry, just got too busy, but hopefully next week).

In this ep, we're finally digging deep into Marillion's Happiness Is The Road Volume 2: The Hard Shoulder. We manage to cover Thunder Fly and The Man From Planet Marzipan - the latter of which manages to provoke some of the soul searching and strong emotions that we thought we'd managed to avoid this time. We should know ourselves better...

Comments

This might be controversial, but I think The Hard Shoulder might be every bit as good as Essence. The songs might not be quite as strong, but the instrumentation is more interesting, and it's more varied melodically and texturally. It also feels more polished sonically. I'm relatively new to both volumes and I think I made the initial mistake of listening to both in succession, like they're one complete album. It was too much. Definitely not the way to listen to them (and definitely not the way they should've been released!). They both benefit greatly from being treated as individual albums and listened to in complete isolation from one another. I might have to expand on these thoughts in a letter.

I always liked the "little saint nick" xmas CD version of thunderfly better than the original. Tongue planted firmly in cheek, and just the right amount of christmas cheeseiness. The line about "feelin' all the presents at the foot of my bed" makes me smile every time! ....now if h had only paid attention when i sent for his crooncast consideration my excellently rewritten lyrics to a certain recent single "coffee machines"....

Cool. Listening for the drive home tonight. Maybe you two will find the album to have some merits. I do think it's a bit better than it's reputation.
