EARLY ACCESS: BYAMPOD Ep72

A rather different episode this week... a real mixed bag, as we dig into the fan reaction to AHBID, the recent drama on the Marillion And Fans Facebook group, a report on Mark Kelly's book launch... plus, thanks to the presence of our TWO very special guests, we discuss growing up in a Marillion household... Please note: this episode features a real baby!

EARLY ACCESS: BYAMPOD Ep72

Comments

Yeah, I noticed the YouTube uploads. It jumped out at me, but I guess YouTube is essentially just another streaming service these days, so I guess it all counts towards chart positions.

Happy to report that my opinion on murder machines has indeed softened since first listen. Sadly we didnt get the whole album early over here - i think the 11am thursday UK time release was purposeful to stop us antipodeans making the rest of the world angry at us for getting early access - guess i shouldda just kept my mouth shut! So, first listen to the album... i couldnt get into it *at all*. i was crushed. So i went away and listened to the BYAMPOD review from a couple of weeks back, and it made me happy that you two both got so much out of it...so i went back, listened to the album again. Still nothing... Fast forward to a week later. They've done it again. I cant get these bloody songs out of my head. It's gonna sound epic live - especially if they bring the choir along for the weekends. ...now if only my physical copy would hurry up and arrive. Actually - one point of criticism (if im allowed - im staying well clear of the fan pages!) The downloads seemed hastily thown together. They werent even track numbered, so you had to sort out the running order for yourself. Embarassingly, it was easier to go away and find an illegal download of the album that was properly named, numbered and embedded with album art. If i compare this to one of my other favourite bands releases from a few years back, Nine Inch Nails released "the slip" as a freebie download, each track came embedded with its own different artwork and it was just a nicely presented download. speaking of free releases - remember the fan backlash when HITR was released and they leaked it free to filesharing sites? This time around, they've stuck the entirety of AHBID on youtube and no-ones even batted an eyelid! They're probably too busy bickering about some other trivial nonsense.

Firstly, it was lovely to hear Bruce goo-gooing away in the background and to hear your daughter’s thoughts on growing up with Marillion’s music throughout her life. It had the unintended side effect of making me a bit sad remembering my folks, both of whom passed in the last few years, and the vivid memories of them playing their favourite songs in the car and at home as I was growing up too. I think the negativity online is a huge shame. Sadly, that sort of toxicity is rampant in online fanbases. It’s huge in Star Wars and Trek. For my part regarding the album, I’m really enjoying it but am only five or so listens in. At times the lyrics can be a little on the nose, but also very beautiful in many instances. It’s a lovely record.

Bruce was a terrible guest. He hardly said a word, just kept drinking and dribbling. I'm still none the wiser as to his opinion on Marillion. Does he like AHBID or not? Does he prefer Fish or H era? If he does come on again, I hope he will at least have mastered basic manners, and basic vowel and consonant sounds. 2 stars.

I never understand why people feel the need to comment negatively on music (or whatever) they don't like. I always get the feeling that there are hardcore Fish fans out there that troll Marillion online arenas. I find it incredible how many posts by Marillion themselves are met with scores of 'Marillion died when Fish left' type guff.

I was never really massively active on the group, I'd post a few comments here and there and like some posts but never contributed too much but I've ended up leaving it now. I'm just at a point now with things I'm a fan of where if I enjoy it, I want to enjoy it and if I dislike it then i'm happy to just cast it aside and that is sort of that. I can't be bothered with any drama that comes from it. As you've said, it's not unique to Marillion, the Dream Theater groups are always in a constant state of war with Portnoy Vs Mangini and I daren't poke my toe too deep into the Star Trek fandom at the moment because it seems you can't say you enjoy modern Trek at all without a horde of angry people telling you why you're wrong and why Discovery is awful. I can totally understand why they've stepped away, like you say they've spent a few years crafting the album, there is so much going on in the world right now and the last thing they probably want whilst they should be celebrating this new piece of work and enjoying themselves is to be seeing or even dragged into the drama of it all. I know myself working in the games industry and being part of a release, you dread the negative side of anything because you are proud of and want to celebrate your hard work. It's just a bit of a sad situation and people have this tendancy to just go way too far.

I'm in the Sanja camp here, regarding pronunciations
