EARLY ACCESS: BYAMPOD Ep 53

This week's BYAMPOD wraps up our look at Marillion's Anoraknophobia - an album that surprised us both, chiefly with how much we enjoyed it. Although, we don't always agree about which parts are the most enjoyable. Nevertheless, Marillion have turned a corner at last, and the future is bright. Well... mostly. Also: we learn the length of the tracks on the forthcoming An Hour Before It's Dark!

Comments

I think we're going to do the first two... but we'll mainly use them as a jumping off point to talk about something else...

That's definitely a comment Mark has made a few times, but I remember the demo really clearly. I managed to find the Anorak demos page on the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive, and it's listed on there in not-a-joke-form. Unfortunately, no longer downloadable, but I'm glad to know my memory wasn't playing up. Ironically, they also had demos for several tracks that made it onto the album, but it was the two which didn't - Purple and Experiment With Gas - that I remember loving the most. It might've evolved into something else, but the original music was definitely not used.

Paul Rose (Mr Biffo)

Wasn't the "experiment with gas" demo title a cheeky nod to a comment one of the band (Mark?) made about some fans only caring about track length, not quality and that they would rather hear 10 minutes of farting noises.... So it was a demo of one of the long tracks. Or something like that!

Great to hear the appreciation for the mighty IMHWABIWRU. May I suggest if you're doing a Transatlantic episode you start with Whirlwind? It's their best album by a considerable margin and it's only got one song on it for you to listen to. Alright, that song is 70 minutes long but it's a wonderful 70 minutes (if you like that sort of thing!!!).

Stephen Wicks

I know Montreal is unpopular, but we love it! I think it's a song that earns its cut-and-paste style, as it's effectively diary entries. But anyway, yup. Hear what you're saying. It's all about the arrangement for me; whether the sections move from one to another organically, or feel abrupt.

Paul Rose (Mr Biffo)

'Long songs' makes me slightly nervous. Will it be long and great - Ocean Cloud, TSE, Invisible Man, Gaza. Or long because it's a stream of bits hammered together without musical direction or cohesion - Montreal (the ultimate steamer imo) or El Dorado. Either way, I'm excited. And if it's as good as Wake up in Music it's going to be astoundingly good.
