A SECRET MESSAGE FOR YOU

Hello Patrons!

Thanks again for sticking around. Now... a few things. Firstly, the Digitiser The Show Kickstarter ends in a couple of days. If you can - please spread the word wherever you can. We need that final push.

Secondly, and this is between us, I've been approached about putting advertising on Digitiser2000. I've been feeling a bit uncomfortable for a while about asking you lot to keep backing the site, when I'm also asking people for money to make Digitiser The Show. Obviously, they're separate things operating from different pots of money, and just because one exists it doesn't cancel out the other, but nevertheless... y'know. Guilt.

So, I just wanted to flag up that IF I do accept the offer... I'd probably close down the Patreon. Maybe. I dunno. I mean, it's all with an eye on making enough of an income from Digitiser-related things that one day I could potentially do this full-time (not that I'm making a penny out of Digitiser The Show, but... well...). We'll see. Anyway. That's it.

Go spread the word about Digitiser the Show!

Love you!

Paul

^ What he said.

I don’t mind continuing to support via Patreon regardless of advertising: I see it as more of an endorsement of the creator than as paying for the content.

Thing is advertisers come and go. Patreon will provide a useful fall back. So don't do anything hasty!

I like the current arrangement, where Patreon keeps the site going while Kickstarter funds the specials. It also gives you more freedom to be honest in your writing, to express an unpopular opinion when you feel that it's the right thing to do. Removing the Patreon safety net would be risky if you come to rely on advertisers that will flee when page views drop, or worse, pressure you to stir controversy for clicks. That said, if your potential business partners understand Digitiser and will stick with it through the Sexist/Racist/Centrist/Amiga storms, then grab their offer. If they can't pay for everything, then simply explain what the shortfall is and give readers the option to contribute via Patreon. I do use an ad blocker, though primarily for privacy and security. Briefly, if you're selling advertising space via a third party such as Google, then I won't see anything. However, anything embedded in your site, like a static banner for Dean's fine chip shop, will show up. Drop me an email if you would like more technical details.

I don't think a bit of advertising is any reason to close the Patreon. You have a consistent base here who, I assume, are happy to keep contributing. I’m here whilst my means allow it. To echo others, we don’t care if you’re earning some money and if a company wants to sponsor Digi I say gouge em for all their worth.

Sam's right. I've enjoyed your recent Patreon-donor-only posts, e.g. about your wider work and so on. Keep the Patreon and put up the ads as well!

BUT SECRET MESSAGES.

Honestly, if our patronage means you have free reign over the ads, choosing only ones you deem okay, instead of being forced to do just about anything just to pay for expenses, then I'm happy to spend this money.

I assume that a man of your fine integrity won't just take any old horrible banner that ruin the site so I don't think we will all be assuming you are captain greedy man. I would continue to give via the Patreon anyway, unless you become a millionaire racist

I'm happy to keep Patreon-ising... Patronising...? you also. If you wanted to be formal about it, you could do what some sites do which is to remove the adverts for paying members. But then you would need a logon system for the site, which may not be easy.

John Veness

I don't think it matters keeping both. Let's be realistic, we can use adblock if we hate the adverts. Just don't have an anti-adblock popup thing that begs to be whitelisted before cock-blocking us and it's all good.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with you having both advertising and a Patreon at the same time, but then I'm from the old school world of magazines where publications were always funded by a mixture of sales, subscriptions and advertising. I certainly wouldn't think it was weird or wrong to have both.
