Book 6 - Chapter 11

I'd love to see him lean into the earth side. He said previously that being an illusionist is an open secret now, and a lot of the previous book was leaning into the power of making his illusions more grounded in reality for the wyrd to take hold. Earth would open up more materials he could use to do so. A mage of crystal/gems could be a fun way to explore that. It isn't too big of a departure from glass. He can make more gems for Marksi, and it would let him assist Hogg with making some of the rarer materials that they need for crafting more doohickeys. If he could get his memory of glass skill to include other materials it would be a huge win. Thanks for the chapter, enjoyable as always!

2026-02-27 07:07:00 +0000 UTCLaser mage is cool but bit of a one trick poney. It would be a bit of a letdown to only get a "mage" class as well. Focusing on earth, fire and air sounds like a good combo.

With his ability to project the wyrd coming entirely from illusions majoring the fire track doesn’t seem like that bad of an idea, especially since he learned how to control the wyrd from the student of one of the most powerful witches to ever live, and then spent an entire war practicing his wyrd abilities against witches. He could even do things like attach compulsion this to his glass creations like making a glass pen that improves your focus or a paperweight that calms you down or improves your memory as a gift to lumina or something. There’s also a fact that lasers are something that are uniquely his and he could get a lot of levels from that because it’s somewhere where he’s pushing the boundary of what’s possible because he’s the only person to have ever done it. But in the end, I think the best choice is for him to do what lumina recommended and try to be more generalist and major in the Earth track (which has an advantage in due to memories of glass) and major in the fire track as well (because he has lumina and hogg to teach him)and then minor in the air track cause it covers the defensive weakness of fire because you can make “weirdly effective barriers” like hog said, and it can improve his mobility while being weighed down by a bunch of heavy glass and improve the speed of his glass projectiles.

2026-02-27 05:01:04 +0000 UTCYo, if Brin could make pure silicate Willow Glass tubes and shoot lasers through them, he could create fiber-optic cables , mabye stop the demons in the wires problem? If he focused on earth, he could make tempered glass (for thermal shock resistance) and laminated glass (for kinetic protection). His borosilicate glass is already a great electrical insulator, but he could also make doped glass or ITO glass for electrical conductivity. Since borosilicate glass is generally very chemically resistant, he could create multilayer glass shields that are highly resistant to every type of damage , and he could repair them almost instantly with his morphic weapons skill. If we add fiberglass to make things more flexible, he could create glass golems that store electricity or light and then release it, or he could reinforce his shields for greater impact resistance. Him working with Admsii to create glass golems could be really interesting. One of the most damaging moves he’s used is sending a small, sharp glass projectile into someone and then making it explode from the inside. Weirdly, he doesn’t use it very often, even though it’s been extremely effective every time he used it in the early books. If he could improve that technique with an earth specialization, it seems like a realy strong offensive option. Lasers are cool, and being able to instantly hit any opponent he can see is incredibly powerful , range is king in combat and his range is the horizon , but glass seems far more flexible overall. Plus, his glass magic doesn’t have an obvious counter the way his light magic does and he could actually show off his glass powers and share his inventions with them instead of having to hide his light powers to stop people from knowing to just throw an evaladis down to stop him . Lastly, he has memories of glass not memories of light, it makes sense for him to be able to do way more with glass than light. The earth track major seems like the best choice offensively defensively and socially.
