Hah, this was a thing that was discussed during the design. With nautical ships, the "bladed" edge is on the front, while with airplanes it's on the back. Since the lore is that these things emit "heavy" clouds of aether and then basically rocket-swim through them, we took the happy medium and reversed them because it looked cooler. (But also because it's not as much drag as you get from water, a lot closer to air.)
