About The Future Of This Patreon

Sorry for the scary title, I'm not going anywhere, at least not yet! Please read on for some important information though.

I am making this post in the interest of transparency and to keep you guys up to speed with my life and what's going on, but first, a little background.

When I started our current system of biweekly builds, (a build of whatever thing I was currently working on every other week) I had just graduated from college with a bachelor's in what essentially amounted to game design.

Me and every other slightly nerdy kid who grew up with video games.

As you can imagine, this led to total saturation of the game design job market. Companies started hiring mainly internally, and relegating any new external hires into potential dead end positions like QA. It was pretty grim. I had always wanted to be an independent game designer and my games were getting some interest on AOTK, so I set this patreon up and that's been my existence since.

At first, this was great because I was living in a really crowded apartment with several other students, so rent was low and everything was good. Once those roommates went off to chase their own ambitions, however, I needed to find a place for myself. I picked a little studio apartment which was where I developed EDEN SEED and Night of the Spanking Dead. To maintain that place though, I had to get a really awful part time job at a supermarket so that I could make rent. My weeks were basically 3 days at this crappy job, 4 days working on my games, no days off. I did this for several months and it was great, right up until the moment that it wasn't.

Thankfully, before things got too unpleasant there, I moved into a place with my partner which is where I am now. Rent is lower here, but it will never be as low as that first apartment. Since everything went crazy with COVID-19, I was basically working on my games here full time.

All of this is to explain to you why I decided to return to school to get my master's degree, and hopefully secure a more stable future for myself. Don't be alarmed though, I am not going away, and I am going to do all that I can to maintain current output here as it is, but as some of you know, graduate school is really demanding.

If my workload gets to be too much doing this on top of my work for graduate school, I will be shifting this Patreon into a per-post payment model. I will of course let you all know if that is what needs to happen, but I hope that it won't get to that point.

Thank you all for sticking with me for so long, and I hope that this ride will continue as it has for a lot more time!
