1971 CIA Report on Soviet Cruise Missiles

This is a great piece on what the United States thought about Russian cruise missiles in the early '70's.  They were way ahead of us, but there is a little bias in this report as not to embarrass us too much.  Good historical perspective.

SS-N-10 was the SS-N-14 Silex ASW (with limited ASuW capability) missile while the last SS-N-2 variant was at the time given its own designation SS-N-11 until it was ID as a Styx family member and redesigned

This is soo cool!

The Buyan class have 8 VLS cells that's quite impressive for a class that's less than 1000 tons fully loaded. Russia have always perused corvettes and patrol craft as an excellent solution for coastal and EEZ control. The cruise missile capability though is of some concern as the vessels are small enough to travel around Russia's vast river system and circumvent the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) which prohibits long-range cruise missiles from operating on land.

Cool Aaron. I have a question for you How really surprised you reckon the American Navy was at the fact that cruise missiles were managed to be launched by Russia from the black sea during the Syrian war from such a small platform (corvette?) Do you think that would have caused an immediate re-think of strategy etc as an result?

very interesting :) p.s. any idea why parts of it are still classified?

Awesome report, thanks!
