Please verify. I know that there are some confusion and misinformation on the sources, but the reactor BM-40A with 2 loops, not the OK-550 with 3 loops were installed on Project 705K.

The nuclear depth bomb would destroy it if it hit it with the shock wave.

awesome brief jive, Really impressed by the design of the Alpha. I was curious if its invincibility to the weapons at the time included SUBROC? I know its nuclear payload would make it a last ditch attack, but i wondered if the nuclear depth bomb could be overcome by the Alphas speed.

We tried a liquid metal reactor in Seawolf (SSN-575), our second nuclear powered boat. Before she was even done with sea trials, Adm. Rickover decided to axe the Liquid Sodium reactor.

isn't it possible to heat up the coolant to the point it becomes liquid again? or is it too much effort/too dangerous?

A work buddy of mine is a sailor and amateur mechanic, he was browsing trough a book I showed him and when reading chapter about Alphas pointed at the page and said: "40 thousand horsepower, that's the number I needed to know".
You can drive a boat at 20 knots with diesel and batteries but by the time you reach 40 you are looking at dual nuclear reactors. Drag scales with square of speed IIRC.

Thanks Jive great work on this. I really enjoy the personal touches that you add from your own experience encountering the opposition subs.
