Early & Ad Free: Blood, Sweat, and Side Plates: The Reality of Building an Aluminum a Catamaran (Part 5)

Ahoy Delos Tribe! Part 5 of the build is ready for your viewing pleasure. We're starting to feel the pressure as our deadline for the flip approaches. So we kick things up a few gears as we continue to make unbelievable progress on the hull. It was sooo incredible to see Delos 2.0 start to really take her shape, and it was super motivating to keep pushing ourselves every single day. My back however was not as impressed as we were, and unfortunately it was time to pay the tax on all the huge gains we had been making...So I traded my steel toed boots for fuzzy socks, and swapped my jeans for sweat pants and hunkered in for several days of recovery on the couch. But the couch couldn't keep us down, and we managed to take advantage of some time at home to focus on the interior a bit. And of course the team was still hard at work throughout, and one of the coolest things they finished while we were away was some of the really big side plates started going on where the windows are...this was sooooo cool to see, and it's definitely a moment we will remember of starting to really see Delos 2.0 for the beautiful boat she will become. Also, for all you "woohoo" lovers, we've got some VERY impressive footage of Sierra on an absolute tear on her bike that's quite adorable and hilarious 😂

We hope you enjoy this one, and as always we are sending sooo much love and gratitude to each and every one of you!

Brian, Kazza, Sierra, & Mormor!

This process is very enlightening, but with many , if not all constructions projects budget and schedule are key. How are y ou doing on both, budget and schedule?

Richard Bencivengo

Ha! My wife used to work for a company called Staodyn in Colorado when we lived there back in the 80s. They manufacture and market TENS units. We both wound up in sales for the company working with physicians and chiropractors to fit their chronic pain patients with TENS units. We got 80% success with these patients. Glad your having success with TENS.

Robert Palumbo

Actually I haven't calculated that. Delos is 4.6 meters beam x 16 meters long but tapers in a lot at the stern (and the bow obviously). Delos 2.0 is 1.6 meters beam x 16 meters long x 2 hulls but barely tapers in at all in the stern. Both are average 2 meters high inside. So if you were just to ignore the tapers on both ends and treat it as a rectangle we would get 147 cubic meters for Delos and 102 cubic meters for Delos 2.0 for just the hulls. but due to the taper of Delos in the stern I bet it's way more close than that. I could probably spend the time to calculate the actual volume but you know how it is.....

Hey Tom, so far so good. No, I didn't get an MRI done. I have been doing a lot of stretching and core strength training which I think has helped more than anything. If it comes back I will seek out an ortho, but since there is a delay in the vids it's been about 2 months and I feel better than ever so I hope that continues.

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah Gregg, we still have the good stuff from Mexico. The TENS pad also worked wonders, and with the stretching and core exercise routine from the Chiro I'm feeling pretty damn good. I just gotta keep up the exercises!

Sailing SV Delos

Yeah, they are a super fun group to work with. We feel like we hit the jackpot with Stradbroke! We hear you on the drawers, so many factors to consider. I myself am not a favor of needing to lift cushions to get stuff to will put some thought into that. so much fun to work through everything though.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Dan, yes absolutely. The Chiropractor gave me a set of stretches and lot's of core strength exercises. Those and the TENS pad have worked wonders and I'm feeling better than ever, even less pain than before the project started. Just gotta keep up the exercise!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Lee, actually sadly yes and it's happened to our designer David previously. I believe they visually copied the lines and profile on another design, although the real IP is in the 3D model that has all the dimensions for the pieces, etc. And that's locked down pretty tight as you might imagine. I think you could get an idea of how a design is put together, but reverse engineering without actually being able to measure each part I think would be super difficult and time consuming. We'll have another one when we're back from the Annapolis boat show! Stay tuned :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Jeanne, you're absolutely right. The chiropractor gave me a set of stretches and core strength exercises. I started doing those as prescribed and along with the TENS pad it's really done wonders. I even bought a little bench and some weights and started training again. Taking it slow but the pain is gone and have never felt better really :)

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yes like a giant erector set on steroids!

Sailing SV Delos

I'm sorry to hear that Stephen! I feel your pain, although I think to a lessor extent.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Frank- Kazza is putting some thought into that. If we can find a way so it doesn't make the galley feel confined, like over the breakfast counter, we might do it. But it will be a bit tricky to pull it off. Stay tuned.... Back is feeling better than ever, I am on a new regimen of stretching and core strength training :)

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Garry, yeah buddy the Chiro really set me up with a good regimen for stretching and core strength improvement. That and the TENS pad has worked wonders and I've felt better than ever as long as I stick to my routine. So far so good!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Robert thanks so much! Yeah it's really fun to see everything coming together. So many details, but we're really into it :). Actually my back has been feeling better than ever. The chiropractor gave me a number of stretches and core strength exercises and I have been sticking to those. I even started lifting weights again and it's really helped. See you in Annapolis! Brian

Sailing SV Delos

It is so much fun seeing Delos 2 coming together. It's going to be such an impression boat. It looks like Kazza has her hands full engineering the interior but it's so cool she gets to put her training to such practical use for your lives. My heart ached for Brian's aches as I had a very similar lower back and sciatica pain that lasted on and off, mostly on, for ten years back in the late 70s thru early 80s. Thankfully it is healed. I'm hoping Brian's pain is short lived and won't be a distraction to all the work and adventure that lies ahead. We're looking forward to the Sailboat Show in Annapolis! Will nugget be bringing her bike? :D

Robert Palumbo

Maybe Rx for Muscle relaxers. Also Chiropractic doctor can help. There are exercise routines to help sciatic nerve pain also.

Garry Gill

Have you considered some small food storage bins in the galley overhead? Hope you're feeling better Brian, take good care of that back!

Frank

Having serious issues with my spine, severe scoliosis, stenosis and ankylosing spondylitis etc. I am quite familiar with back pain.

Stephen P Griswold

Just amazing to see it all come together. Brings back Erector Set memories!

Michael Williams

Brain work for the design. Great work😎 as for your back, dear Brian, medication and therapy is one, strenghtening the muscles an other. Sorry to mention…But as time moves on…hmmm…you know what I mean, it becomes more and more important to focus on training those muscles. Shortage of time and possibilities is one, but the need for specific physical training is a must. You should make time for it, it will be very beneficial on the long run. As a former Balletdancer I have stories to tell about back problems. So take it from me👩🏻‍🦰🕉️👩🏻‍🦰🕉️👩🏻‍🦰🕉️

Jeanne H. Mathieu

I’ve been wondering if there’s a risk of someone stealing the design. Simply by watching your videos and I know it’s not something I could do. Yet I’m sure there’s engineer’s out there that could. Finally when are you having a patreon get together while your still living on Stradbroke Island?

Lee Pottle

I agree it sounds like sciatica. Lots of ibuprofen, rest and stretches. If you Google “sciatica stretches”, there’s some decent info, and they work well. This build is amazing to “participate” in… looking forward to meeting you again in Annapolis next month. Safe travels.

Dan Moss

Thanks James, and yes we are! We haven't worked out the details yet (stay tuned here, we will definitely let you know as soon as we make solid plans) but as always we will be having a Patrons meet up, hope to see you there!

Sailing SV Delos

Twooh is looking good. You all going to be in Annapolis this year?

James Good

The crew there is amazing! You must happy you picked them to build your cat! Galley design and storage. In a kitchen, I typically used 4 drawers in the available height, usually 30 to 32”. I start with a shallow drawer on top, and increase the height going down to a fairly deep one on the bottom. Making drawers too deep is a waste of space. The different height drawers allow them an accommodate different height items, and not waste space. Any seating areas in the saloon, can also have drawers, instead of lifting cushions, and hatch boards, and hunting around in deep, top loading bins. A lot to think about!

Mark Gumprecht

Brian, do you know what the volume of a single hull on Delos 2.0 is, compared to the volume of Delos? I've got a degree in Industrial Arts and after 40+ years of drafting for metal fab shops, I understand why it's called the industrial arts. The fitters & welders on the shop floor are artisans.

lowell mccormick

Brian it seems to be sciatica causing the pain down your leg. Did they do an MRI of your lumbar area? A chiropractor can help short term but an ortho specialist can work on a long term relief. Been there...done that my friend.

TOM PASLAY

Do three or four triple doses of Ibuprophen. If you have 800mg, do 2.4 grams, etc. sounds like it would ruin your liver, but it won't as long as it is limited to 3 or 4 doses. Rest the muscles for overnight and with that, it should help to alleviate your pain.

Gregg Parrish

Awesome! Love seeing these build videos! Such an appreciation for the hard work and super thoughtful design. Exciting!
