Early & Ad Free: Why ALUMINUM Catamaran Vs. FIBERGLASS (DESTRUCTIVE Testing)

Hey hey friends! We're back with part 2 of the boat build, and in this week's episode we're answering one of your questions...why did we choose to use Aluminum for our boat? Aluminum has many strengths (and weaknesses) and we're going to tell you about them all. You're going to see one of the things we like the most about aluminum in action...which is how easy it is to fix your mistakes with it...and as a newbie welder, believe me there are plenty of them. It's been so incredible to learn how to work with aluminum in this way and with the patient guidance of such an incredible team. I can't imagine how it will feel the first time we untie the lines and set off on a boat that we literally helped build with our own hands, with all our blood, sweat, tears, and little mistakes and triumphs all mixed in. It's soooo freaking cool, and we hope you are enjoying these videos as much as we are!

Sending lots of love and gratitude from Sweden!

Thanks Kazza and Family for these well presented insights on your criteria for choosing aluminum. I learned a lot. Thanks for the personal mention as well, makes me feel part of the show. Looking forward to more of the tech as it builds up. Sending you some love and energy. Eric

Aluminum is a wonderful material; I sailed years on an alu monohull and experienced many time the benefits of it! enjoying seeing your video. keep forward!

xavier duveau

Agreed. I’d buy a few delos bottle openers!

Zak Verduyn

They definitely look like bottle openers to me!!

Sadie Johnson

Hey guys. You should take the aluminum scraps from your cnc cutout sheets, and send them back to a cnc shop that can cut out small Delos shaped sailboats as keychains or bottle openers or something so you can sell/give away functional trinkets made directly from Delos 2.0 fab stock. People would love it!

Dax N Lexi

Agreed…bottle opener with Delos logo in it

Andrew Berry

Thanks guys, appreciate your kind words and hope all is well with ya!

Sailing SV Delos

Also, we love love love watching this boat build. We can't wait for each weeks episode to come out. Learning all about the benefits of aluminum in this episode was awesome. Good day from eastern Pennsylvania.

Ben & Suzanne Morrison

Bottle opener with Delos 2 hull lazered into it.

Hey thanks so much for sticking with us for so long, we really appreciate that and the support. The build is a really cool project to sink our teeth into and we're learning lots. The only way we wanted to do it is if we could really be a part of it. We sailed right past Sag Harbor on our way south from Maine. We wanted to stop but it was blowing 35 out of the north and freezing cold so we just rode along with it. Seems like a super cool area and we'd love to explore someday! Cheers- Brian, Karin, and Sierra

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for your kind words Eric, that means a lot to us!

Karin

Sailing SV Delos

Love the bottle opener idea... what about fishing lures?

Michael Williams

Your videos continue to be awesome!! I figured life on land would not be as fun to watch as life on Delos in exotic locations. But your story telling talent shows through even for "boring" life on land. Even more, your explanations and details of the Delos 2.0 build are fascinating. Thanks so much!

Eric G Miller

Hello from a small town called Sag Harbor NY nestled in the Hamptons New York..I have watched your videos for 7 years and now I joined your tribe…I absolutely love seeing the build and I’m so excited for y’all to have all that space on a catamaran…You have my respect for being apart of the design & building process..I’m glad to contribute as a patreon member …Cheers

TMonster

You could make two out of each blank. 1.5" x 1.5" ... just the superstructure ......... the flipping hook ... could be the necklaces connection. I normally have a necklace I made with a small piece of dead (living rock) coral from the FLA Keys ...... but could replace it with D-2! Keep 'em flyin

Bonne Mike

That certainly looks like 100s of bottle openers. I would buy one.

Edgar Vinueza

+1000 to the bottle opener idea. Maybe with Delos 2.0 inscribed?

Justin W Kraemer

PS I think it would be fitting to turn the scrap aluminum into bottle openers, could there be anything more perfect to help us sit down and have a beer with you?

Colleen Balch

A big hello to Mormor and sending hopes that Sweden in late summer is just lovely. Thanks for another great view into the build :D and jackpot! “school” was a huge hit!

Colleen Balch

Well I came across this youtube channel that inspired me to enjoy life more and to get out and see the world 😀 I will definitely try balut. Thanks again for the inspiration 🙏 🙌 🫶

Barbara Whiteside

Yes fantastic idea, on the list for sure 👍

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yeah she’s already picked up quite a few Aussie words and pronunciation but she’s really blossoming and growing so much. They do a lot of painting and crafts and she absolutely loves that!

Sailing SV Delos

He he that’s a creative idea. I’ll add it to the list 👍. Really happy to hear you liked the video ⛵️

Sailing SV Delos

Yes, that could work really well!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Sean- yes absolutely! The small welder we have at the shop is single phase, 220V and would actually run off our inverter onboard. It's capable of doing about 90% of the welds on the boat which should be sufficient for repairs. Plus think of all the cool stuff I could do with it :)

Sailing SV Delos

That's a very cool idea Scott! Yes of course Patrons would get first crack. since the numbers are small we could try to personalize them as much as possible. Sending you lot's of hugs and good vibes and thanks again for all your support!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for watching and your support Chip!

Sailing SV Delos

I like the necklace idea too, pretty cool and would be fun to design and fabricate :)

Sailing SV Delos

They are really a super fun group to work with and I'm learning so much. Pretty cool!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Justin, really appreciate your kind words and sending you lot's of good vibes!

Sailing SV Delos

Mabuhay Barbara! So awesome you're in the PI. Man, I love how much you get out there :). Get yourself some balut and don't think about it too much. he he!

Sailing SV Delos

He he not a bad idea! I'm hoping the entire boat will act as a faraday cage :)

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for the comment Michael, lot's of ideas!

Sailing SV Delos

She won't be an upwind demon, but if you believe the calculations she should point at least as well as Delos does. We've found actually that since we mostly sail on the ocean, and very rarely on flat waters, it's actually the size and direction of the swell (and your tolerance to slamming into waves) that dictates how high you actually point....

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Rick, Awesome idea, love it. We'll add it to the list. Cheers!

Sailing SV Delos

The spare aluminum would make awesome keychains for us land-based dreamers!! Thanks for the informative episode. So cool to see the details of this build. Can’t wait to see her in the water!

Rick

Aluminum is a great choice for a build. At first I puzzled as to why you wanted to go with a Cat as they don't point as high and do well to windward. Then I remembered, you hate beating. You might offer the scrap parts as souvenirs inscribing them with the Delos name. It would be like owning part of your boat. The Battleship New Jersey is selling off its old zinc cathodes after its dry dock time.

Stephen P Griswold

I was thinking a mini Delos 2.0 model.

Bill Dapp

AGREE!

michael

NECKLACES YES

michael

THANK YOU! THE LITTLE PARTS, A DESK PLATE, WOOD BASE, SOMETHING LIKE "SV DELOS 2.0" THANKS TO (OUR NAME) USE -SCOTT C. WISE -COMMENT. HOWEVER' I DO NOT LIKE CONTEST. MAY BE CONTEST FOR THE FIRST TEN. MYBE ON BACK OF PART PHOTO OF DELOS AND DELOS 2.0. I ALSO LIKE BONNE MIKE COMMENT ABOUT NECKLACES ONLY CHAIN. WE LIKE KAZZA OUT FIT. SIERRA SO CUTE. WORKERS VERY SKILED. FROM MIMS FL.

michael

So cool guys thanks for showing the progression. No popcorn welds Bri, your good .lol. Maybe you can practice on the blanks and make cellphone faraday cages for when you leave your phone topside in a storm ? Awesome vid, thanks!

david marentette

Beer openers sounds like a great idea 💡 😀

Barbara Whiteside

Good morning from the Philippines 🇵🇭 💕 Great episode. Any boat I buy will have a skegg!! Learned what that was from watching your videos. Thank you for sharing so much with us ❤️

Barbara Whiteside

it's really cool seeing D2.0 coming together piece by piece. The engineering marvels of REVIT and digital CNC cutters have revolutionized our ability to make massive jigsaw puzzles like boats! Its so fun watching how into the process you both are, Brian doing the physical laborish stuff and mowing lawns, and Kazza bringing the design to life. Now that the boat is flipped and you guys are walking the interior, it's going to have so much more wow factor seeing both of your hard work coming to life. Such an incredible accomplishment to be able to be so involved with this project for you guys. Hats off to Dan and the crew at Stradbrooke for letting you guys live the process. Don't get too used to your land legs though, Melbourne is an amazing city, but there's a lot more ocean out there to explore! Your family is such an inspiration and Sierra is so lucky to have you both as parents. Keep up the great work!

Justin W Kraemer

Great video! Informative and fun. What a great group of guys you are working with! So much talent! Loved the expression on Sierra's face before school and the spring in her step afterwards. ❤️⛵️

CATHERINE HACKETT

4 mm? 0.013 feet. In my days as a Land Surveyor we would have christened that as "Good Enough for Gov'mnt Work! "That is only a 5th of an inch over 54 feet? And You were there to make it like that. Your Day Care School was a massive success ........ Sierra at breakfast reminded me of getting my twins up for school every other week. They were always happy to come home though ..... especially if we stopped at McDonalds or Arthur Treacher for Crunch Pups. Maybe next time you will experiment ... your boat will be concrete? Maybe those aluminum blanks could be caved into miniature cat hulls ...... and made into necklaces with leather straps? By the way .... I was way ahead of you on aluminum boats. I have a Grumman canoe! Keep 'em flyin

Bonne Mike

Awesome Video! Learned a lot and enjoyed it!

Chip Andrews

About those aluminum blanks, . . . I think you should have them engraved with SV Delos 2.0 including the date Delos is completed and a number for the blank. The numbers would start with 1 and continue on up. You could put the first 100 (if you have that many) up for bid. Number 1 being the first then so on. Who knows how much $ $ $ number 1 would go for? You could get some good money for the first 20-50 - or more. If you have over 100 you could number them as well but ask for a fixed amount or have a contest where people could win one. I think patrons should have first shot in getting one of the early numbered "tags". It would also be cool if engraved signatures of Brian and Karen and Sierra could be added. But all that engraving could add up $ wise.

Scott C. Wise

Questions for you guys: are you going to be able to weld and do repairs while underway or afloat? are you going to have a welding station somewhere in the boat? Thanks Brian and Kazza, have a great weekend!

Sean Martin

💜💜💜 with little modifications, alu could be used to make desk accessoires such as pencil holder or weight to hold letters for example More welding, more fun…and of course warm greetings to Sweden…hey, hey, we are on the same time now 📡📡📡

Jeanne H. Mathieu

Det är så kul att få följa ert bygge som går med bra fart. Inget segt bygge där man plastar en liten grej varje vecka! Kommer ni ha någon träff i Sverige också?

Maria Levin

Idea for the aluminum scraps: make "Patreon Plankholder" medallions!

Sean Martin

❤ GR8 VID ❤ LOVED IT ❤

David Haney

Great insights into the build process. I feel better with my own aluminum boat with each episode :-) You could transform the scrap cutouts to little tools (like they come with bycicles) and add a Delos logo or the ships silhouette :-)

Michael Wilke

SV Delos Friday is THE way! : - ) So, we got to see some aluminum magic this episode. It was also fun to see Sierra almost pout about going to preschool and then to see how happy she was when you picked her up. I wonder if one day at preschool won't be so fun? But I hope she continues to enjoy getting to know the other kids and having fun playing together. Just wait until she comes home and you can't understand her once she learns native Australian! Hahaha

Scott C. Wise

The scrap cutouts look like an excellent shape to make bottle openers from, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Bar-Commercial-Quality-Tezzorio/dp/B0741QX2K3?th=1
