Early & Ad Free: We’re Building An Aluminum Catamaran! PART 1

It's finally heeeeeere 🥳 We are so incredibly excited to share this one with you! There's lots to catch you up on on all the progress that happened before we even arrived, and we take you along as we settle into this totally different and totally exciting new life for us. It felt pretty surreal to be honest, we've spent so many years dreaming and planning for this day, and now it has finally arrived! We were excited to be challenged in a new way, learn A LOT, and watch our dream come alive right before our eyes step by step and piece by piece. It feels great to start putting these episodes out into the world, and we are so stoked for you all to come along on the journey with us!

In other news, we had a truly dreamy week in Lake Tahoe visiting Brady & Blue complete with a bday celebration for Sierra (CANNOT believe she is 5!!!), horseback riding, wake surfing, sailing, a river float, and possiblyyyy a cold one or two. But now its time to pack our bags and head to Sweden, we will send you all a little update soon once we are all settled in.

Sending lots of love and gratitude to all of you!

Brian, Kazza & Sierra 💕

Yep, 7.5 metric tons after all the scrap is recycled ♻️

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Kate, really hope you like the next video also!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks for your support and making it possible Dave 🙏

Sailing SV Delos

It sure is Jerry, a very interesting project to sink our teeth into 👍😉⛵️

Sailing SV Delos

Wow, what an amazing opportunity to build your own catamaran home from bow to stern. Super excited to see Delos 2.0 in all her glory. Should you need a free extra set of hands give a shout as I’m Semper Paratus, Captain.

Jerry Roush

So excited for your family and this grand adventure! You guys are the OG of sailing channels and your talent for making videos is fantastic. Thanks for documenting this epic build.

Dave Willard

Great work on the video, this one was really well put together. Thumbs up for the slightly longer format. The technical aspects were explained perfectly for a layperson (like me)! And the Stradbroke Yacht guys are so impressive, i enjoyed the backstory. Keen for Part II!

Kate Latella

As I remember from my machinist years and working with a European crew, the two are different pronunciations of the same thing, and spelled differently as well. I noticed it more from the Swiss guys, since they enunciated their words, almost to the point of singing!

William Flower

Wow, what a lot of metal and process!

Tim Heslip

Hey Mark, her Full Ship displacement (with fuel and water) should be about 16,500 kilos. (16.5 metric tons). The aluminum itself is 7.5 tons, and fuel and water will be about 1.5 tons. The rest is equipment, stores, interior fitout, propulsion, etc.

Sailing SV Delos

The welds are super strong, but the heat from the weld does slightly affect the strength of the metal around. It's accounted for in the design and thickness of materials used but definitely something to be aware of.

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Patrick, this was a super fun one to put together because there is sooo much progress to show before we even arrived! So exciting!!!

Sailing SV Delos

Thank you for coming along with us Colleen! We always appreciate your support and the words of encouragement you always send us! 🥰

Sailing SV Delos

Glad you enjoyed Gary, yeah it's been so great getting to know the guys and working together, they are such a huge part of the story we definitely wanted to include some of their history!

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Jeanne, we will see you then with our next video which is all about why we chose aluminum and some of the cool parts about working with it!

Sailing SV Delos

Yes it's so true Catherina, we're really ticking all the boxes lately 😂 It's certainly been a whirlwind and I think we will definitely enjoy our time in Sweden, and it will be great to have a little more free time as we are now getting to such a critical planning stage in the boat as we try and figure out all the systems, interior, and so much more...takes lots of time and research to figure it all out! And yes of course some downtime with family is always so incredible!

Sailing SV Delos

💕💕💕💕

Sailing SV Delos

Thanks so much Patricia! Yeah there are a lot of moving pieces to make it all go down and we are learning sooo much, and also so grateful to be in such good hands with Dan & the team!

Sailing SV Delos

Awesome video! Really brings home the complexity of an aluminum build. So impressive!

Patricia

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Barbara Whiteside

I love this mixture of overview and deep dive. I like the detail on the too-short keel and how you dealt with it. As I remember, the welds end up being the strongest part of the structure. The stresses are released, canceling each other out?

William Flower

It would probably have been something like the Garcia , you can get some sweet deals on decent Garcia 65’s ! I’ve always liked their designs.

Sailing SV Delos

You know you guys have completed some of the most stressful things you can do as a couple: move to a new country, start a new job, get a new house and car, start school. If you really wanted to send yourselves over the edge you just needed to throw in a wedding!! Thankfully, you've already done that. Anyway, I hope that now the initial burst of labor has ended and your visiting family you can get a bit of a breather. Great job!!

CATHERINE HACKETT

Swell 💜💜💜it is very hard work. You guys are basically moving mountains 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻can not wait for next friday ⛵️⛵️⛵️

Jeanne H. Mathieu

Enjoyed this, was nice to seeing the backgrounds of the builders. I liked the time laps videos, welding is welding and filming it would only slow production. Hope the Sweden flights went well.

Gary Farmer

Its awesome to see the entire vessel square within a couple of millimeters. Of course that's in her current environment. Once the boat is in the sun and heated unevenly, not to mention her flex in heavy seas, she may settle into something like 5 mm of square. Nevertheless, she'll likely spoil you with a silky smooth and level ride. What is her finished gross weight? Delos 1 is so nautical looking, I hope you save some funds for dressing up 2.0 with some hardwood surfaces, flooring, and cabinetry. Can't wait to see the finished result.

Mark Capalongan

So, it's being made of both metals. Hummmmm Plus I just added a bit more to my comment and am quite curious about those questions. : - )

Scott C. Wise

Yes, and yes 🤣

Sailing SV Delos

We probably don’t say this enough, so THANKS Kyril, Kazza, and Brian for making it possible for us to come along.

Colleen Balch

The excitement is building so it's time to hit play on this SV Delos Friday! First, what I want to know is, is this sailboat being made of Al-U-MIN-E-UM or A-LU-MI-NUM? 8 - 0 Also, I'm wondering, . . . what kind of monohull would you have made if you'd decided to go that route? Certainly aluminum, correct? But which "style". If you had gone that route instead, could Stradbroke have built it?

Scott C. Wise

You did a great job of producing this video! It is amazing to see how it all starts from the plans to the cad cutting out all the framing and the prepping before fabrication and welding. Wow, I really we enjoyed learning all of this. Thanxz!
