I think Mami is inherently split between not wanting Madoka or Sayaka to become magical girls because it is tough and dangerous, but also actually wanting them to become magical girls because Mami herself is lonely - she has nobody to share her pain or hardships with. That is pretty much what is implied in the conversation between her and Madoka in the labyrinth, and also why she becomes so happy to hear that Madoka will join her. And also the reason why she is so back-and-forth between pushing them, while also reeling them back. And yeah, Madoka Magica is an anime orignal series, so NOBODY knew where it was heading (haha) while it was airing. And the marketing of the series literally only showed the cutesy stuff - nobody was expecting it to take such a dark turn, which is why episode 3 is so (in)famous. 14:46: Yeah.. Unlike Mami (I'm so sorry) Also, like you said in the start - Episode 1 introduces the girls, episode 2 introduces the world, episode 3 is where shit gets real
