Remember that Higurashi, Umineko (and Ciconia) play in the same universe, so you can make connections crossing those as well. Okonogi using the chessboard analogy underlines this fact even more. I wonder if you‘ll think of Satoko the first time you‘ll meet Lambdadelta.
Also, as promised, I love Satoko.

This episode is a good example of how a lot of things change when you rewatch the series over again knowing the culprit. As you pointed out the "Box trap" was a direct reference to something all the way back in episode 1. But if you go back and rewatch the series you'll notice Satoko being suspicious constantly, running off with people / being off screen, not reacting to certain things etc... There are a ton of little hints here and there.
Also this episode had a very subtle Umineko reference, no spoilers, but Umineko makes a big deal about Schrodinger's cat at many points in the story. Which is just the theory that you can never know what is inside a box until you open it, so therefore a sealed box can represent many things to many different people based on their perception and prior knowledge. In this episode there is quite literally a Schrodinger's cat box that Rika presents to entrap Satoko. Satoko has no way of truly knowing what's in the box, but because she acts on an assumption based on prior knowledge of what she thought was in the box she fell for the trick.

She does carry that pouch strapped to her side all the time, she has it in the earlier scene. Pretty easy to conceal a gun in there lol

Yess I love the reveal in this episode. The KO Box was such a neat way of doing that reveal. It was such a small moment in the episode that it happened in but it was quite literally so "in your face" so it was hard to forget. It made it really easy to let the viewers make the connection before Rika even says anything about it . I know I'm such a simp for the structure of these episodes but I also love, as you pointed out, how the episode is bookended with antagonist blonde women with guns pointed at Rika. Its a neat way of showing that Satako may have usurped this role as trapping Rika in the endless birdcage of 1983. Also look out for a new ending song beginning the next episode! It doesn't get proper visuals for another few episodes after but it's a real banger.

When this episode aired, some people complained about Satoko pulling a gun out of her ass. I never considered this as an issue at all. She could have a holster strapped to her leg. And a looper could easily get a gun. The mountain dogs, Takano or the Sonozaki's have plenty of guns Satoko could steal. It's not like anyone could stop her.

Same people can perceive others timelines memories like Kei in ch.6. Same happened to Takano, she is not a looper. The flashback at the star is probably what she remembered.

In the VN finale Satoko wasn't aware both about Satoshi's location and her condition.
