Holy fucking SHIT, that's all I can say to this one! That HARD cut! (e:actually this was meant to be on the LAST episode, oops!)

It is a rough episode. The roughest, imho. But it's also a very interesting one, and tbh, the first time I saw it the thing that came to mind was that Satoko was gaslighting Rika. All in all, L5 Satoko is even more terrifying than Takano, perhaps due to her proximity to Rika.

Such a good episode. Whoever was doing the story boarding did an amazing job, I feel like this episode had so many good scene transitions and such good pacing. I loved your point about how opposite the first half of the episode was in comparison to the last; the last one was such rapid fire despair and this one was really slow and agonizing. Anyway, yes this is really the Stockholm syndrome episode where Rika ends up getting gaslit into thinking she was wrong for wanting to leave. One thing I love a lot about this aspect is that the episode kind of plays it straight; we obviously feel like there’s plenty of reasons for Rika to hate hinamizawa but the show doesn’t really give us anything overtly to tell us “hey, Rika is being gaslit, she really shouldn’t love hinamizawa.” It actually seems to be trying to show us genuine reasons why hinamizawa is a decent place which is kind of gaslighting the audience too. It’s a neat effect. Anyway, awesome reaction. Next episode is a doozy so I’m looking forward to it!

Gonna be honest, I was never a big Satoko fan in the original series. I didn't hate her, but I always felt she was just kinda uninteresting outside of her arc. But Gou does a lot to give Satoko some more depth to her personality, and some real creep factor with this episode. I've never been more terrified of anyone with HS than I was of Satoko in this episode lol

Rika is not to blame for simply wanting to leave Hinamizawa; there is a lot more to it all. I want you to think about how Rika and Satoko treated each other before. Did Rika really think of Satoko as her best friend despite herself saying so? You will also find out more in the upcoming flashforwards.
Also, I will keep posting I love Satoko here until the series ends.

This episode turned Satoko into the most terrifying Higurashi character, in my opinion. This girl could surely work as head interrogator for a dystopian government. Gives me strong O'Brien vibes.
