The U.S. Armed Forces did not purposely leave their dead unburied on the battlefield. They would usually be interred in temporary graveyards if possible before eventually being placed in official military cemeteries abroad, military cemeteries in the U.S, or wherever their families desired. Of course there were many thousands listed as MIA (Missing In Action) meaning that there wasn't a body found or it wasn't recoverable. According to the U.S. government agency in charge of recovering such remains, "Of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II, more than 400,000 died during the war. At the end of the war, there were approximately 79,000 Americans unaccounted for. This number included those buried with honor as unknowns, officially buried at sea, lost at sea, and missing in action. Today, more than 72,000 Americans remain unaccounted for from WWII." Due to the less chaotic on average nature of the conflicts the U.S. has been in since WWII, and especially after the U.S. military became a purely professional force with the end of active conscription in 1973, the rate of MIA cases has decreased dramatically. For example, there are no MIA cases from the U.S.' twenty-year war in Afghanistan (2001-2021), and just three non-military Department of Defense contractors MIA from the U.S.' war/presence in Iraq (2003-2011, 2014-present).

Hi Guys .. MacArthur wanted to take the Japanese airfield at Paleiliu so the US Air Force bombers can use airfield to bomb Japanese forces on Philippines..but, after Marines secured Paleiliu..MacArthur decided NOT to use the airfield, because US Navy had many aircraft carriers, MacArthur "F-ed up".. many Marines die for nothing.. (my uncle was there as a "corpsman" ( US Navy medic) ..he told me this fact. MacArthur made many mistakes, he should not be held as a GREAT hero, a US Navy Admiral should have had MacArthur job as big boss in Paxific, MacArthur was Army general and did not understand sea warfare..he did not know airwarfare ... he eff-ed up a lot through his ignorance and his ego.
