They believed they could overcome the Americansโ defenses through sheer numbers, and that the Americans would run away. When the Japanese learned otherwise, they switched to tunnels and reinforced defensive positions.

There is a amazing movie from the Japanese perspective called Letters from Iwo Jima which I hope you check out, which shows the difference in Japanese fighting style, which a lot of the Japanese soldiers struggled to follow. It takes place over the same islands and is the flip perspective of the battles you will see in the Pacific.

The main characters are Sledge (Joseph Mazzello), Leckie (James Badge Dale), and Basilone (Jon Seda). Many others, such as Sledgeโs friend Sid, were real people. The story is based on the memoirs of Sledge, Leckie, and Chuck Tatum, a Marine who fought alongside Basilone.
