Kiseki: Dear To Me Episode 12 (Full Reaction)

Chen Yi and Ai Di's story makes a lot more sense when you have all the puzzle pieces (it will be most impactful when watching the episodes close together and/or when you've already watched it once) - that way, everything will still be fresh in your mind. Ai Di and Chen Yi grew up together, and during those years, Chen Yi developed a "crush" on their boss/father figure. The show seems to suggest this was more of a worship-turned-misplaced-love kind of situation so that's what I choose to think of it as. During the scene in the cake shop, when Ai Di considers buying them a cake for their shared birthday, Ai Di mentions having been "rejected three times already", which is why he is hesitant. He also mentions already having bought a present, which is the tag with Chen Yi's birthdate (which was previously unknown, thus why they set a fake date for their shared birthday and why it has so much meaning; Ai Di went to the lengths of finding out Chen Yi's real birthday and was going to gift it to him). Zong Yi then convinces him to buy it regardless, and Ai Di ends up alone when Chen Yi, instead of keeping their promise of celebrating their birthday together, chooses to spend it with the Boss. Ai Di, of course, could have gone with him, but I don't think he would've wanted to spend his birthday watching the love of his life moon over their father figure. Thus, he ends up not giving Chen Yi the cake or the birthday present for a fourth year in a row, which explains the scene in which he places the gift box with other gift boxes in a blue box in his room, hidden away. When they slept together and Chen Yi was drunk, Ai Di assumed Chen Yi did so under the assumption that he was drunk enough to assume that he was actually sleeping with the Boss, which is (one of the many reasons) why he was crying during that scene. In his love confession, Chen Yi admits that he was actually aware that night, and that he knew who he was sleeping with. Going back to the scene at the prison, Chen Yi doesn't outright confess his love because he has just begun trying to untangle his feelings and is in the early stages of realizing that Ai Di actually loves him and that he might actually love Ai Di, not the Boss. He brings a cake with the numbers "1922" for their respective birthdays, 19 and 22. He is, for the first time, taking the initiative - but that's not going to bury literal years of seemingly unrequited love and constant rejection. The scene with the many cakes with their birthdays and Ai Di, alone, blowing out the candles isn't something that happened in prison. The candles show that their birthdays predate that of Ai Di entering prison ("1518", "1619", "1720", etc.); it is all of the years that Ai Di spent alone celebrating their birthday and blowing out the candles, all the years that Chen Yi didn't celebrate it with him, presumably spending it with the Boss instead. During his confession, Chen Yi admits that he started imagining what that must have been like when Ai Di went to prison. Ai Di going to prison was a huge deal, not because of him going to prison, but because it was the first time in a long, long time that Chen Yi and Ai Di got some space from each other. Chen Yi had time to realize how much he actually cared for and loved Ai Di, something he might not have realized before because they were constantly up in each other's space, with little to no room to breathe. When Ai Di gets out of prison and Chen Yi (clumsily) tries to make his advances, Ai Di dismisses him because of all of the aforementioned reasons, but also because he thinks he might be Chen Yi's rebound for their Boss. Chen Yi has a difficult time expressing himself (as does Ai Di, they're both emotionally stunted and their situation isn't helping), but it's not like he doesn't make it clear what he wants, he gives him gifts and tries to kiss him. Ai Di isn't blind nor totally stupid, he realizes what Chen Yi is trying to do, but like I said, it's not going to unwind the years of rejection and disappointment, nor is being a rebound all that appealing. When talking to Zong Yi, Ai Di makes it clear that he's really afraid that he's looking too much into it, that he's seeing things that aren't actually real because it's what he wants to see (which, understandable, having loved Chen Yi for so long and suddenly having him pursue him seemingly out of nowhere must seem quite unreal, especially after all those years of rejection, watching Chen Yi pine for their boss, and having the love of his life constantly making it clear that he sees him as nothing more than a "brother"). Zong Yi tries to reassure him, but isn't all that successful. In the scene where Ai Di is gifted the guns, the wingman (sorry, don't remember his name) lets it slip that the whole "Zang Teng's men are still after us" was actually a fake ploy made up by Chen Yi to ensure that Ai Di wouldn't leave him in case all else failed (since he knew that Ai Di would never leave him in potential danger). Ai Di then goes to Chen Yi and "kidnaps" him to interrogate him about it, tying him up in a chair. This mirrors one of their first scenes together, in which Ai Di uses this as an interrogation method to force Chen Yi to reveal Zhe Rui's whereabouts. In the scene back then, he concocts a really spicy sauce and fans it over in Chen Yi's direction, who obviously can't handle spice as he keeps coughing and turning his head away. Ai Di then approaches with a rice cake from the spicy sauce and Chen Yi caves, knowing he won't be able to handle eating the spice. Ai Di, on the other hand, loves spice (mentioned multiple times during the show), and so can eat it without problem. In this scene (the same situation but in this episode), Chen Yi merely smirks as Ai Di tries to do the same trick, not even reacting at all or coughing as he used to. And, as Ai Di tries, once again, to use feeding it to him as a scare tactic, Chen Yi merely takes a bite, showing that he's likely been building up a spice tolerance for Ai Di, and/or that he's been eating spicy food because he missed Ai Di when he was in prison. In short, Chen Yi has been doing all these little things for Ai Di ever since he realized he loves him, and Ai Di has been afraid of accepting it because of everything they've been through, but, in the end, with all the cards on the table, Ai Di finally accepts Chen Yi's sincerity and allows himself to open himself up again to him.
