There is the story in the present and three little separate flashbacks with some insights from the past, but other events that happened are only mentioned or hinted at. It made it a little more difficult for me to paint a complex picture of everything that happened. I like the way the live adaptation did it as a whole story in the story; it added context in the past and made me more interested in it.

2023-01-12 00:08:30 +0000 UTCI mean, the scene at the beginning of the first episode sadly didn't look promising for happiness for him anytime soon. 🥺 It's great that no one spoiled to you how long this flashback will last (at least, I didn't notice that anyone would), so you don't know where you are in the story and when that tragic fall will be. It adds mystery and suspense.

When Wen's army destroyed the Lotus Pier, they also destroyed many other clans, sparking a war with the entire cultivation world. Lan Zhan was fighting in it, specifically trying to get Cloud Recesses back, and was successful (the only clip we saw with him in the previous episode was his victory).
