There is one detail in the novel that isn't in the show, and that is the fact that one of the reasons Clan Leader Jiang left with YanLi in the previous episode was to get Madame Yu's favorite hair pins as a surprise for her because she was mad at him, which I find as a really sweet gesture, and it makes their fate even more tragic for me. They didn't have a marriage born of love, but they had respect for each other and really did care for each other.
