The Untamed Episode 1 (Full Reaction)

WELCOME TO UNTAMED MONDAYS!!! 🤩

Soooo much to learn and process in episode one but this is just the beginning! We'll slowly start to learn names and grasp more of what's going on as we go but for now we're just trying to take it all in!!! For the most part I feel like we were able to figure out what's going on but please feel free to let us know if we missed or misunderstood anything cause it's a lot to take in LOL.

Excited to keep learning more about these characters and this world though! We're definitely invested already, haha.

I wanna continue watching this series so what's better than rewatching the episodes I've already seen with you guys 😌

I'm so glad if it helped, even a little. ❤️ When I watched it for the first time, I was absolutely lost, and it doesn't help that the subtitles often show a completely different name than what is said (like, for example, when Wei WuXian addresses Jiang YanLi, he almost always calls her "ShiJie," which means "senior martial sister," but the subtitles always show "YanLi," or when she calls Wei WuXian "A-Xian," the subtitles show "WuXian"). There is a lot about the characters' relationships and nature that can be told just by how they address each other, and the subtitles are absolutely ruining it, which is a shame.

WOW this is awesome!! Thank you SO much for the detailed explanation. I’m so excited to have your insights for the show moving forward. We still kind of struggle with the names but I’ll refer to your explanation often until it sinks in LOL thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoy our reactions and hope you have fun spending time with us! ☺️♥️

So, I'm a little late to the party but super excited to catch up on all the episodes you've already reacted to and then live this watching journey with you in real time. It's my all-time favorite story, no matter in which medium I'm absorbing it (the novel, manhua, donghua, live action, or audiodrama). You probably already know all this after four months of watching this show, but I still wanted to address some things you said in case you didn't know something about them. There really is a danmei (the Chinese genre of BL) manhua, which was recently finished and should be published in its official English translation really soon, but the story came originally from a novel of the same name, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, like Philip correctly said (or Mo Dao Zu Shi in its original), by author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The manhua is still slightly censored (you will only get hints of sex scenes and not explicitly shown kisses), so if you want the real deal, I recommend reading the novel (which will soon publish its fifth volume). As for the name of the show, "The Untamed," I don't know the reason why they chose this name in particular, but all live adaptations of the danmei novels in China that I know of have a completely different name than the novel they are based on. I also didn't see any explanation in your comment section for why each character has multiple names, which can be confusing, so while I'm sure you're already orienting yourself with the names by now, I'll give you some inside on that. Everyone has a family (clan) name (Lan, Wei, or Jiang) which always comes first, followed by their birth name (Zhan, Ying, or Cheng) given by their parents. Then there's the courtesy name, which is used in this ancient Chinese genre media for everyone (or at least every male character, because it was historically a male-only tradition and only those with high status, if I'm not mistaken), usually given when a person reaches the age (WangJi, WuXian, WanYin). If a person has a courtesy name, it is considered offensive if anyone other than elders addresses them by their birth name (which is why later Lan WangJi reacts the way he does when Wei WuXian addresses him as "Lan Zhan"). If people are very close, they can also skip the family name in addressing each other or even add "A-" before it (Lan XiChen calls his brother just "WangJi," Jiang YanLi calls her brothers "A-Chang" and "A-Xian"). Then there's their title, to have even more names, which is given after they archive something significant (HanGuang-Jun, YiLing Laozu/Patriarch). To explain the situation with Mo XuanYu and how Wei WuXian was resurrected, in the novel, Mo XuanYu summons Wei WuXian's soul into his own body, secrifice his own life and leaving the body for Wei WuXian's use so he can get revenge on the people who bullied him. As a result, Wei WuXian appears in a different body, which is why people don't recognize him and mistake him for Mo XuanYu. However, changing actors would be inconvenient for a live action show, so they did it with the mask, which was rumored to be so iconic for Mo XuanYu that no one knew how he looked without it, so when Wei WuXian wears the mask, people believe he's Mo XuanYu. If that makes sense. Thank you so much for that great reaction. ❤️
