The romantic writing might seem odd because it's a bit too realistic between young people who don't know what they are doing

Layman's Outlook

Same, I love that he goes from being absolutely resolute, then over dinner we see him maybe starting to reconsider it -- but ultimately the TARDIS intervenes so we never get a resolution to what choice he would have actually made.

I think this episode is underrated. The scene between Margaret and the Doctor is one of my favorite scenes of series 1. Also Rose learned that the way she treated Mickey was pretty cavalier, and I was glad she realized at the end of the episode that he deserved better.

I was surprised that Adam found Rose and Mickey's interaction surprising really. We don't get much of a glimpse into their relationship prior to the Doctor being around, but from what we do see it's very clear to the audience she is not invested in it, which sort of explains her lack of self awareness around it. I've always got the impression there was a mutual loving relationship there at some point before the series started but all we've seen on screen is the very one-sided relationship they have now, that Rose just isn't there for, so anyway, that very awkward interaction in this episode made a lot of sense to me.

The point people - especially viewers watching it these days - miss about Rose is that she's young. She's only 19 years old, and decides to go off travelling and seeing the universe, but doesn't necessarily realise the impact it'll have on the people she's leaving behind. She's not malicious, she just doesn't realise, until by this point with Mickey where it's too late. She likes him, but it's like a couple that kinda want to stay together without realising that they're drifting apart.
