I have lost count of the familiar faces that show up on Doctor Who in one-off roles all the time lol. But wait am I missing something? I didn't know we'd seen any familiar faces yet.

Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi is peak Doctor Who for me but man I love me some Christopher Eccleston he's such a good Doctor!

There are at least 10 people in doctor who who’ve been on taskmaster (tiniest hint there) including NYT

Queen Naga 🌶️

We primarily have Nigel Kneale to thank for the long running bleak tone to British sci-fi. He popularised the sense of impending doom and bringing heavy elements of horror into his sci fi tv with shows like Quatermass and The Stone Tape. He was a major influence on Dr Who and you can really feel Russel T Davies echoing Kneale at times. Loving rewatching this series in reaction form here btw

I like Bobby Fish… but he’s got this fish gimmick

Dickens was not the greatest to his family - had a lot of affairs and was extremely horrible to his wife - while portraying himself to the public as a wholesome family man. Plus he near worked himself to death and was obsessed with money (having grown up in poverty). So the idea of a man full of regret is pretty close to the mark. Part of the BBC's legal job is 'to inform, educate and entertain' and Doctor Who was originally envisioned as a way to teach history to kids. So while it wont be 100% historical (what with all the aliens) the show is usually pretty well researched.

A man in a purple suit showed up at my door and now I'm just compelled. Can't quite explain it

Depressing? ...Well now you pointed it out, you're not wrong. It livens up...at times 😂 A lot of sci fi gets very deep and dark and address political and societal issues beyond the aesthetics, it's something I personally love about it but I also understand why it's not something everybody seeks for relaxation, however I think Doctor Who isn't too far on that scale where you can't just have fun watching (most of the time). Some episodes are more ridiculous than others and even make *me* cringe (my fav sitcom is Peep Show) and some episodes rip my heart out, it's good for variety especially if you're not into scifi (yet 👀) since a lot of episodes are set on earth to ease you in. Anyway looking forward to seeing most of your questions answered in the future eps 👌

I don't know much about Dickens either but the actor, Simon Callow, has written several books about him, so they brought in the expert to play the role. Doctor Who has a real world connection to Cardiff, where they accidentally landed in this episode. This series was produced by BBC Wales, which is headquartered there.
