I've been thoroughly enjoying my time working on Beast Planet this past month. Here's the latest.
Started to work on UI concepts, including the main title/logo, basic HUD elements, and some menu ideas. Want to keep the menus simple and slick with a black and red color scheme, and perhaps one other highlight color. I think it can be a powerful design, but I must be careful to avoid the Virtual Boy look, and avoid the overuse of large swathes of loud red color.
I made a simple death animation for the hunter sprite. Basically one frame, and splat! I created different orientations, so we can dynamically have him fall depending on the way he is facing, or direction the blow comes from. However, if it only showed one direction it probably still looks fine. Might fancy it up, but I like the abrupt splat action. As soon as you die, everything will fade to black except for your corpse, while the text 'annihilated', or something of the like appears. Well, that's my idea. We'll have to see how it all feels in context.
I also made a bit more progress on the mecha animation. I recently completed the up and down facing slash attacks, and made some small tweaks to the right and left. We'll have to take it for a test drive before any more tuning. The attack has a fair amount of anticipation/delay before the strike lands. This is deliberate to capture the weight and power of the machine. Also, I want the combat to be about reading your opponent and telegraphing precise strikes, not just combo mashing. Ultimately, it will come down to fun factor, and I won't hesitate to revise if the result isn't fun.
