And so, the time has come for the final showdown.
As we reach the climax of our story, I notch up the detail with this scene. At first, the setting was going to be a desert wasteland, but was changed to the city for a more epic vibe. I was a bit nervous about the complexity of executing this scene, but the process went surprisingly smooth. From the outset of this series I set some stylistic limitations in order to capture a cohesive aesthetic. One of those limitations is to avoid point perspective and rely on abstract projections to capture depth. Partially, this choice is a personal preference, but I also think it strengthens the nostalgic game quality of the art.
Moreover, I was able to quickly generate the city from a few building templates, which I then iterated on until there was sufficient variety. The projection I used for the buildings is executed similar to isometric projection, but uses different ratios for more side view, and slightly less top down view.
The drama is going to get more intense in the next scene. Stay tuned!
