Rural Connection

The wind is a major element of the Kansas countryside, but I find it difficult to capture its energy in a realistic manner. In this experimental animation I applied ripple and wave distortion effects in After Effects to multiple layers. I varied the speed and wave lengths of the layers to convey depth and create a convincing rhythm. If you stare at it long enough it looks a bit strange, but I think the impression of wind is immediate and affective. Definitely easier to execute than animating every blade of grass one frame at a time, and the looks are most likely better than I could achieve that way. I'm excited about this development and seeing lots of potential for future animations. I have some music projects that I'd love to create full music videos for. I imagine this as just a short scene in a much larger story. Hang with me on this journey and you will see great things manifest.

Music also made by me. Title of the track is 'Rural Connection.'

Thanks for the tips!

It plays quite nicely on the bushes, but looks too mechanical on the grass and the tree. Few ideas to make it look more natural: (1) Animating some parts manually (eg. slanting the tree; slamming windows doors or shutters of the barn) will draw focus toward those points and should remove the feeling that the whole animation is achieved by a script/effect. (2) Wind doesn’t blow with a constant strength – usually you have a strong blow and then a brief moment of silence. It also goes from one direction to the other (right to left in this case). You could show that on the grass starting the animation at the right side and offsetting the effect to the left. Not sure if you get me, but I'm trying to convey what MarcoValeKaz did with animating banners here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo9V2HtpiSw
