In every level we introduce unique mechanics to create more engaging gameplay, and strengthen the theme of the level. This week I'd like to show you an ice machine we recently created to make our snow level more interesting. These indestructible towers will generate a long change of ice tiles that often must be broken to pass safely, or sometimes they form around goodies, and things you want to access. The ice tiles are quite high defense so they are a factor that cannot be ignored. Before it was just straight shooting, dodging gameplay with little variation in the flow of the action. Now, there are many memorable scenarios created from the ice dividing the screen.

Ice breaking animation. These 7 frames took me longer to create than all the rest of the elements combined. I think it's worth the time to make satisfying destruction animations, especially in shmups.

I'll have an update on the story sequence next week. Hopefully, the second set of cells will be done by then.
