Fred Again mashup mixing approach

sorry about the delay with this one guys!! ❤️

In this vid I breakdown the mixing process for the fred again mashup :)  let me know if there is any other songs/music vids/ live sessions that you would want to see a breakdown!

I hope everyone is well, big love homies xx

Comments

I'm not a producer, heck, I'm not even a musician but I really enjoyed this. Love the finished product💖

Me too. So many raves

One of my favorite sounds of yours is in Genesis, behind the line of the padded cell, the spinning off into the distance yell. Very Nice.

Just watched this for the second time and fully enjoyed it… personally I’d love to see more videos like this Ren. Much love 💕

🩷 love this 🖤

I’m so late to comment because I thought I already did. Just want to say a HUGE thank you for doing this video… it’s really valuable information and was a wonderful demonstration of just how much work you do to make your tracks top notch! I appreciate your music even more now (if that’s even possible) Thanks Ren for your countless hours of tedious tweaking… I hear/feel the difference 😉💕

fascinating.

Tanya TMS

Great insights thanks love to see more

These ideas could spark a revolution in the way young songwriters produce their music who are without the money or access to studios. DIY culture is necessary and much appreciated

Just an incredible experience to see this all come together, amazing skills in all areas.

Max Kenny

Ren, that was fascinating to watch. I may not fully understand it all, but being able to watch your process is crazy. Its an art form in and of its self! And, absolutely yes, please do more!

I love how you’re discussing this in feelings.

I used to go to clubs and put sparkle on

So cool to see this is so interesting. hope you do more of these Ren it is neat to see how a song is made the Fred again mush up is awesome.

That was so interesting. Thanks Ren. ♥️♥️

So much work into one song. Can only imagine how long it took. Love the fact you do everything from start to finish

I was thinking this exact thing! I’m a photographer and it is hard to explain how stacking 10 layers of messing with contrast slightly looks so much more real and has more depth than just dropping one crazy curves latet on the top. And how at first people can’t tell which file was the edit until you pay attention to the individual parts of a portrait

Violets Tale if you have the files still, there’s parts of it that sound so incredibly full with just your voice and guitar

I just want to know if you sent it to Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice, she REALLY wanted to see your logic files 😂

Thanks for sharing

More of these!

Hannah Alexandra

I would love to see more of these. I find it all very interesting.

I have no experience with this, but I still found it really interesting. I'd love it if you did more of these.

You're speaking greek to me. But what I have learned is you have the perfect ear for music and are a wizard. Keep it up!

Kelly Srader

This was so interesting! As someone who has no experience with mixing or music production, it was fascinating to see the process. And seeing how meticulous you are, just increases my respect for you and your music. I would love to see more of these 💜💜💜

I don't know anything about producing music, but this was really cool, so I would love to see more videos like this! And I love that you intentionally add sparkle to your music!! ✨ Btw. I'm glad to hear you are sometimes an idiot. 😁 It just shows that you are human, along with the rest of us that makes silly mistakes on a daily basis!

Amanda Nott

When this was amazing. Your music is perfect to you. Never change, always evolve.

This is incredibly fascinating!

That was fascinating. I haven’t gotten to play around with software for almost 20 years (oh that makes me feel old) so it’s cool to see what this fancy new stuff can do. I’d love to see more of this kind of video!

Chrisy

That was great bro, I really appreciate the open book!! I can understand why you take the time to mix, and it sounds great. I could listen to you sing the phone book without that. LOL

Oh, this needs to happen!

Ive worked with Audacity but it does not remove enough as its very very old. Or Im not doing it correctly? And some of them were recorded so long ago that it has that "tube" sound in the voices. Just a hobby project but the OCD still cicks in. Have heard some people manage digital remastered versions that sound like the guy recorded it yesterday. So cool.

I don't do this, but a buddy does, so I asked her recommendation. She said she uses Audacity but most audio editors should work, "but very lightly, else you lose what makes vinyl special." It's all voodoo to me. 😃

Interesting how you breakdown the song. Do you think the process influences your playing and live performances in a "circular refinement" kind of way. (i.e. I like mixing this type of sound, but I can kind of mimic that with my inflections while playing live.)

Sheesh. I don't have the brain capacity for all these little intricacies he's playing with. Dude's a straight up fekkin genius

If I don't fathom anything else he's said during this fascinating process, I now fully comprehend the importance of sparkle and warmth, especially on the top end!

I know nothing about mixing, not interested in producing, but loved watching this!! Thank you so much for sharing, would love to see more like this.

Chelsea George

I know nothing about mixing. Only thing I know about music is what I like. And I thoroughly enjoyed every single second of this! I would love more of this! More of breaking down past videos, etc. Great job! And anyone saying ur 'cheating'? They can suck a potato!

I used to do fancy edits in Photoshop and it reminds me a bit of that process for me. Layers and layers and layers of subtle effects that barely make a difference but it made a visual difference to me and I loved the process so I totally get it. Plus the end result is amazing and when you listen with a. Good pair of headphones, you CAN hear and feel the difference. It’s not a waste of time at all

This does not just appeal to producers! I found it fascinating, love to hear the thought process and see the meticulous attention to detail - it's what makes it so brilliant. Thank you - I'll always enjoy videos like this!

By the way: We should all do our online meetings and streams without pants. Then the other participants stay focused. Very helpful for ADD.

I had my sound engineer look at a piece of it. I should have filmed his face. The whole time his mouth was open and he nodded and gestured with his hands as if he wanted to tell you something... We had a very long conversation afterwards (of which I only understood half). He thought it was great!

What ever you doing it's tickling our ears nicely 😊👌 keep doing what you enjoy and we will enjoy watching, listening and learning from your beautiful work 🤗thank you ❤️

I agree with ”Ready for you”, as someone already requested. I totally love that song After that ”Lost all Faith”, pretty please! ❤️

I don’t know what the fuck your are talking about Ren. Except murdering people?? That’s troubling. I did listen to you explain your brilliance and madness and Loved it !!

As someone who is more interested in process than outcomes, this was a treat for my ADHD brain.

Dyana Prewitt

It’s a real joy to see the pleasure you get from the mixing process. I would happily listen to you describe your modifications until dawn. Thanks for re-doing this one, and please feel free to take us on another such journey with a future song. 🎼

Kathleen Kristjansson

Love ya too & I love watching these breakdown. Please keep doing them.

Anything pertaining to Ready for You...I dont think I've ever heard you say anything about that one and it's my favorite ever..Even Knocked When Doves Cry down on my list. 😁

LisaMarie_82

Seeing how you do the mixing is super interesting. I think you underestimate the enthusiasm of the uninitiated 😂 it'd be cool to see more in the future for sure.

I was so intrigued by the info and being an idiot myself, I had to show my Hubby cause he just bought a new beat machine and is currently learning these types of programs and add-ons. I would love to see a breakdown of more songs but also interested in seeing how you pull samples or decide which sample to use so maybe a Wicked Ways, Power, or Genesis breakdown in the future? Thank you!

Do more of these. Thank you. Had to look up every third word you said, but it’s fun puzzling through stuff i know nothing about. Can appreciate what was already quite a beautiful song and video even more.

Mary Ann Wesselman

I understood very little of what you said, but I loved every second. I’m listening to you say it. Yes more please.

Bob Rogers

I enjoyed that immensely. And now have a new saturation plugin that I need to explore in Decapitator.

I feel what you mean, more than understand the word explaination. Though without both, what I take in would be incomplete. Hmmmm.... that may not make sense. Its like hearing someone (in person) speak and knowing the words can be ignored, because the feelings as they speak are more important. Yet, both those feelings and words are needed for complete understanding. Ah well, it makes sense to me.

Ren talking about smthng he so obviously loves is meditative to me. But then, he could read the phonebook and I'd be set. But the joy in his voice just brings him to life!

R. Jörden

I’m n no way a producer, but I’m fascinated by your process. I love seeing how your music comes to life. Thanks for sharing these, and I will be tuning in to whatever you upload because I appreciate your nerdy passions.

Like others here, I don't really understand it all, but I feel like I'm learning a little of it & where else & who else would I prefer to partake in this than right here with you & all of the rest of us! I find you fascinating & I' m here for it all! Thank you so much and I hope you're making healthy and happy progress in Calgary! Love from this 70 year old widow of 16 years from New York! Hope you get to NY. Before my time is up! I'll be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the passion for the craft, the nerdiness and the will to proof the haters wrong in this video. :D Just appreciate you Ren. With every single thing you say and content you send out here to us into the interwebz, even more than I already did before.

Harry Haller

Funny dude. Bummer, shows you are actually human. 😁❤️

Please would you send Emile. K., on patreon (the guy who sent you the neon pig lamp) signed albums. He was unsuccessful, as I was in obtaining a signed album. I think he really deserves one.... if it's possible at all. I don't know him, but I think he's really generous, and I honestly believe that goodness deserves goodness in return. He hasn't asked me to do this, I just wanted to ask you. Thank you for at least reading or considering this. 🙏❤️

Do you think you spend so much time on each section because each section makes you feel different ?

Would love more of these process videos , no particular songs , just love watching the nitty gritty side of the mixing/production process , thank you Ren ! 😘

I would love more of these! It was so fun watching you explain how you mix, even though I don't have the first clue how to do it myself 🤣😁💜🐷

FerretMom

I'm not a producer but the entire process is utterly fascinating. Will share this with my muso/sound engineer/producer son for sure.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I have no clue what half of it meant, but still found it fascinating. Especially so for this mash up, because to me it was very obviously live, but I thought the production was quite epic at the end. I could hear those subtle adjustments, but didn’t know what they were. I could watch you needing out all day long, because you are a master at your craft and with each new song it gets better in my opinion 🫶

Donna Baker

Wow, that was so interesting! I'm not a producer or involved in music production in any way but I would def be up for more of these if you're up for it. I love BTS big time, and rather than vid BTS, this is like music production BTS, so I'm all in. Thanks Ren!

LoriEldridge

This was fascinating to watch, the teeny tiny nuances that make it come to life that much more!! Chef’s kiss!! I would LOVE to see you show us Masochist. Pretty please with a cherry on top 😁

This was super interesting to watch. Thank you so much for this ❤️✌️

sara b

And yes, please, do another one. Remember the big push video with the comment it wasn't live, or esp. Hi Ren, where a lot of people said it wasn't live, then we can show it Andiroo. He couldn't believe it either.😂 I think Hi Ren would be very interesting because of the changing positions all the time.

Totally awesome. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Ren!

I have no clue about mixing or production but i find it really interesting to understand what my ears are hearing especially on my good 🎧. This is probably one of my favourite tracks you have done ….visually and audibly. Would definitely be interested to hear more about your processes. Thanks Ren 💜

Listening to the song I realized some changes in reverb, but I didn't expect so much work in the smallest details. Now I wonder how an "orderly" production should look like.😄

I absolutely love these! Help me understand how you get them songs to the point where they suck me in and spit me out the other end like a zen experience.

Well that explains how you managed to produce such a beautiful song.💕👍🦇

Guna watch this again 🤣

Debbie

Liv is amazing ❤️

Debbie

Lol!!! This picture from 2019 when I was in Barcelona! If you are in the Rabbit Hole Fan Club, there should be a current pic somewhere there. It IS nice to see peoples real faces! AHEM...Kelly.

Yes to more of this :) And this nerd-roundabout-way of doing it is actually the thing that makes it even more different, because it is more you. So... keep doing it the way it makes you happy, brother. and also: I was so happy you chose to end it on "but i'm really trying", and let that echo overt the city... such a perfect, epic ending! Must say I prefer this to how Fred ended it. And yes, an amazing match to the visual, although even just listening to the audio it's still superb.

Jack

Well finally a face to go with the Frances Doll name I have been seeing for months, in all the same hangout spots.

That was really interesting Ren. I love seeing the magic of it all. Thank you!❤️

Totally outside my lane and I thoroughly enjoyed it! If you happen to mix another old TBP busking session, would really love to see and hear that too.

LoutTsu

I don't understand the technical stuff but I find the process really fascinating to see. It's also good to see how you choose to colour your recordings and make the decisions you do ... if that make any sense. More would be good, thank you x

I’m so glad you didn’t have to be a murderer today Ren 😂 this was an amazing video!! Your enthusiasm and passion for creating this is so evident x

I really enjoyed that and glad you didn't have to kill lol! Looking very good Ren! Lots of love to you!

Really enjoyed this, def not a producer 🤣 Would be really interesting to see what you had to do to busking sessions 💜

Lulubelle

You are an absolute nerd! And I love that about you 😂 "Only really appeal to the producers"... well, I must be a producer* because I found that fascinating! I loved hearing the differences. Even my untrained ears could hear it, lol. It's cool to see your process. I appreciate how meticulous & intuitive you are with your art. Each song feels like so much more than just a song... you create an experience. Thank you for sharing! *I'm not a producer, not even a little.

Really interesting Ren. I love music and singing but know nothing about sound and am not a sound mixing nerd at all. But I do love to experience other people's passions and the way you talk about this is infectious and I feel like I learnt something too! I'd love to hear more!

And no making Ren mad 😂 we want him to be a free man so he can make music. We don't need him killing 😂

Yes more.

I know nothing about mixing but I’m really enjoying those videos. Any insight into your creative process is greatly appreciated ❤️

..that means I appreciate this stuff 😁

Very interesting, thank you, I’m not a music producer, but I understand the passion of Ren. Maybe I should invest in a new laptop and software..🤨

OH!! 🤣 Okay I was slightly confused, as there were no comments saying such a thing 🥹🤣

Love learning about how you mix everything up ❤️❤️

Is there a way to edit out my dog barking in the background? He wants to play fetch when I record, especially when I'm about to get a good take lol.

Oh my gosh 🥺💜 this was so coooool!! 🔥 really really enjoyed this

Wonderful, thank you. No idea about how any of this works, but your artistry shines through, and I can’t get enough of this song. There is just something about it. Seeing the way you speak about the sound evoking a feeling to go with the visual completely explains it. You are a true artist that bleeds music. You seem to have this natural intuition toward sound and emotion, almost on a genius level I would say. ❤️❤️❤️

As someone who doesn't do music himself, I found this to be very interesting. Its pretty awesome to see how much work post-production entails and it makes me respect the final version more than I already did.

Will have to wait til later to watch this but really looking forward to it! Lots of love!

Listening to you discuss the production makes me see the process of mixing as a skill that is as much an art as the initial creation of the raw tracks. We don’t criticize a painter for touch ups/ a photographer for dark room/photoshop skills. You are as you said “using your tools, to obtain your desired sounds”.

Melissa Tomlin

Mate that was friggin awesome. I absolutely love your approach to mixing. Yes it’s unorthodox but it’s your feel that made it and I love it. Go deeper my friend (oo er) Peace & love from Cornwall ❤️🐷

Well that was fascinating and I would definitely want more please thanks ❤️

I think that's what they call an artist. Doing by feel. I do understand, though I do it visually with my metal flow work. I'm totally serious here that with this video, I am very much feeling a connection at the "artistry" level. Thank you for including those personal notes regarding, "no reason, I just wanted it" and the connection between the visual and the sound. The technical bits are going to fly past me. But the emotional bits connect strongly. When I am drawing a design with melted bronze,I am not only considering shape but also thickness, contrast, texture and nuanced movements in the line I am laying down. I would say yes to more of this if it gives you pleasure also. Would never want it to feel like a chore to do for us.

Loved this

Loved this and I have no knowledge of engineering

It's nice seeing you happy, and in your natural habitat 😂

❤️❤️❤️

I really enjoyed that, even though it went way over my head 😉

He did!!! I tell my friends that if they talk bad about themselves…stop talking about my friends like that. I admire Ren and his talent so I will let him know that I don’t agree with him knocking himself.

Melissa Tomlin

You really do pour your heart and soul into your music ❤️

Shot thanks. Will give it a go. Fingers crossed

Usually stuff by izotope is great for cleaning up noise/interference and cleaning up sound sources!

Who said he was an idiot?

❤️

Ren, would love to know if any feedback or response from Fred Again since the drop? I am sure he was happy with it 😊

Watching this mixing process is so freaking cool! You are such a talented producer! Would love to see a mixing breakdown of Money Game PT 3 (music video) or/and Seven Sins at somepoint. Insights of mixing your busking videos would be awesome too. ✌️

Totally off topic but if anyone will know it will be here......What plugins/software will be best to take OLD LPs/78s (early 1900s till 1950-ish) noises off to make it sound more modern? Recorded it directly off the turntables, so the scratchies are too overpowering.

Hey don’t talk that way about Ren! He is not an idiot….he makes beautiful music.

Melissa Tomlin

Song session with Liv sangster! I agree you with you, I claim her as my spirit animal as well 🤗✨🤺

Please can I have chords for freckled angels ideally for the ukulele xx

So much going on here today, its brilliant 🤩

So much love Ren 💜

Ha! I’m listening to it right now 😂❤️👏🏼

I love these! ❤️ Thank you.

Becki

What a day, thx
