How One Lawsuit Targeting Trans Rights Could Undermine Disability Protections for Everyone

It sucks so bad that the accomadations you already had in place had to be rehashed. Its also so frustrating bc a lot of us already feel kinda bad for asking for what we need. We know that, despite the laws, employers and coworkers can view this as a problem. Ive had my own issues but it was a huge deal when an amputee coworker was working with vocational rehab for resources and when they came in said the doors were too heavy and by law they had to have the handicap automated doors (button ones). It wasnt just the cost (our owners are penny penchers) it was also that the installers were messing with the doors. But also it took MONTHS of me pushing her for this employee to ask for it, HSV also advocated. Shes been at the company for over 30 yrs and is in her 60s. I am not on crutches and those doors take all my strength. Bless you and all of us for doing it tho!

TYSM for covering the 504 foundations; as a cis woman who raise 4 kids as primary breadwinner whether I was married or not (loooong story) who also became disabled in her 40’s after over a decade in a state job, where I’d been successful, had to fight hard when a (new) political hack took over my department, blew up my years long accommodation for reduced / modified schedules + remote work pre-Covid) and subsequently used pretense to try to drum me out, despite FMLA & Union protections that were in place but it was not fun & remains a sore spot another half decade later, absolutely some coworkers and employers will discriminate without legal guardrails in place. Exclusions or reduced opportunities for advancement are a separate issue, that is typically unintentional, for sure - however, no friggin way can people with disabilities or any sort of marginalized intersectionality - age, race, sex, et al - give a single millimeter to this erosion of human rights progress. Friggin Clint Eastwood must be so proud his reluctance to widen doors in a hotel is one of his greatest achievements in jurisprudence. He never did add ramps or whatever. Fuck that shit.

Oh my god as a psychologist who is a big fat law nerd this episode is marvelous. It's a pity that it's such a dark topic
